College Profile:
The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) houses nine departments covering a wide range of undergraduate specializations in the Arts and Sciences including English Literature & Linguistics and Arabic Languages, Humanities, Sociology, Social Work, International Affairs, Mass Communication, Psychology, Policy, Planning & Development, Mathematics, Statistics, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Environmental Science, and Material Science. The College also houses Master Programs, which are in Environmental Science, Gulf Studies, Material Science, Applied Statistics and Arabic Language. In Fall 2013, CAS launched a Ph.D. in Biological and Environmental Sciences. Additionally, the College offers a Program of Arabic for Non- Native Speakers. In addition to the established research centers, namely the Center for Sustainable Development and Gulf Studies Center.
It is worth mentioning that as members of QU, CAS faculty members have excellent opportunities to secure intramural and extramural funding for their research ideas. Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) is a major source of research funding, with an individual project funding limit exceeding 500,000 $/project and student research funding programs. As the national and largest University in the country, Qatar University is the recipient of most of the QNRF awards, with many research-active faculty members able to win multiple grants.
CSD Profile:
The Center for Sustainable Development aims to develop sustainable and integrated solutions which address many contemporary and significant challenges posed by the rapid economic and demographic changes of the State of Qatar. Our holistic vision for interdisciplinary and innovative research enables us to identify the key priorities by working together with relevant stakeholders. This way, our research is based on a demand-driven approach and oriented towards tailor-made solutions that are economically feasible, socially acceptable, and environmentally sustainable, ultimately leading to an improved quality of life in the State of Qatar and the broader region. Currently, our emphasis is on research programs related to Biotechnology, Food-Energy-Water-Waste Sustainability and Human Sustainability. We strive to create interdisciplinary research that is aligned with Qatar’s National Research Strategy, the Qatar National Vision 2030, as well as the research agenda of Qatar University. We are committed to innovative and applied research to address the major challenges of sustainable development in Qatar. We aim to enhance local capacity and secure additional external resources, to conduct demand-driven research on sustainable development. One of our main goals is to develop research collaborations and active research groups, while effectively engaging industry, students, and academic peers in our activities. Alongside research, we welcome staff and students in our capacity building activities. We are interested in collaborating with local and international industrial and academic partners to advance the knowledge on sustainable development.
Duties & Responsibilities
The Center for Sustainable Development (CSD) at Qatar University invites applications for a Research Assistant Professor position specializing in socioeconomics of Sustainable Development to expand and strengthen the processes and products that CSD and other departments are developing. The ideal candidate should have a Ph.D. degree in economics, environmental policy, social sciences, or any other closely related fields. The successful candidate will combine and implement the social and economic aspects of sustainability in various environmental and human-use related sectors. The professorship will contribute to strengthening research/collaboration on environmentally related areas in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, focussing on governance, policies, cultural aspects and solutions regarding natural resources use and economic transformation as a thematic priority in the Center for Sustainable Development under the Research Program “Human Sustainability”.
The successful candidate is also expected to lead or collaborate simultaneously in multiple projects in line with the CSD vision and Qatar National Research Priorities. The candidate will actively participate in various committees at the Center, College, and University levels. Preference will be given to those with high research impact in addition to teaching experience. The candidate will have to teach in areas of his expertise and co-supervise students in accordance with QU policy. Furthermore, the candidate should have excellent communication skills, both verbal and writing. Fluency in English is required.
The candidate should participate in enhancing the international visibility of QU through participation in international scientific events and building collaborations with worldwide peer academic institutions. Other responsibilities could be assigned by the Director of the Center.
