Research Assistant – Paediatric Infectious Diseases

  • Unique Research Assistant opportunity to support a dedicated research team investigating childhood infectious diseases

  • Part time 21 hours fixed term until December 2023, based at Westmead Campus

  • Base Salary $79,717 (pro rata) + 17% superannuation 

About the opportunity

The Sydney Infectious Diseases Institute is the home of infectious diseases research, education and advocacy at the University of Sydney and plays a leading role regionally and globally.

At the Institute, we encourage a comprehensive approach to infection, immunity and biosecurity – linking pathogens, hosts (humans and animals), engineered systems and the natural environment in a one planet, one health framework. One of our principal aims is to become a leader in cross-disciplinary research into emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases.

The Research Assistant supports the paediatric infectious disease unit of the Institute, where ground-breaking research is being undertaken into the disease of Encephalitis with findings that will have the implication of influencing policy and practice in Australia and globally.

This position is based at our Westmead Campus, and onsite presence is required.

Your key responsibilities will be:

  • processing, manipulation, analysis and biobanking of specimens for research studies as per ethically approved protocols

  • data entry into clinical databases, data analysis and interpretation and write up/presentation of data to research group and other scientific fora as required

  • execution of the clinical research protocol(s) including consenting participants, telephone interviews with study participant /families, using HREC approved study questionnaires

  • assist with preparation of data for publication and presentation, including production of PowerPoint slides, figures and audiovisual materials for presentation and publication and write up papers under supervision as required

  • perform literature searches and collate references related to the project and discuss these at research meetings.

About you

  • practical laboratory experience in specimen handling of infectious disease samples and storage of specimens

  • strong initiative and problem-solving ability

  • ability to work effectively without supervision and within a team

  • strong communication/interpersonal skills and experience dealing with internal and external stakeholders

  • excellent time management and ability to prioritise workload during busy periods

  • high level of computer literacy.
