We have two positions as part of a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)-funded Partnership Grant under direction of Principal Investigator (PI), Shaheen Shariff, Ph.D., James McGill Professor, to address sexual violence on university campuses across Canada and internationally (“iMPACTS”). During the course of your employment, you may have access to restricted information, and it is required that you keep such information confidential.

Your responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to:

• Engage in legal research of statutory and case law under Project A (Education, Law and Policy).
• Engage in literature reviews of law journals and related legal academic publications.
• Co-write and/or edit research articles for publication in top tier journals.
• Co-write and edit policy briefs, white papers, and op-eds.
• Engage in comparative analysis of community standards and content policies established by social media platforms (SMPs) with Canadian and International law, working with iMPACTS researchers led by PI Shariff, Co-investigators, graduate and post-graduate researchers.
• Assess regulatory processes (such as outsourcing and algorythms), and implementation of community standards by SMPs, drawing on scholarly literature and legal research.
• Help develop legal toolkits and training material.
• Present the project at (online) seminars, conferences, and workshops, or face to face as safety conditions dictate during the pandemic.
• Become an active contributing member of the iMPACTS research team.

Qualifications and Research Interests:

• We seek to hire law students at Master of Laws, or Undergraduate.
• Experience with case law briefing and analysis; policy analysis, constitutional and human rights law, tort law, privacy rights/harm and some understanding of international law, rights conventions.
• Interest in balancing free expression rights with regulation of offensive speech, especially online forms of sexual harassment, non-consensual distribution of intimate images, discrimination, diversity, equity, social media movements and their societal impacts.
• Interest in social media and regulation, reduction, prevention of offensive online speech and related forms of media-based violence and harassment.
