Position Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and productive medicinal chemist to conduct daily research on exciting pilot projects of early drug discovery. This individual will provide services of the MSU Medicinal Chemistry Facility. This facility provides HTS triage, medicinal chemistry design, chemical biology support, analytical support for pharmacokinetic studies and scale-up support for animal studies.  Key functions:

  • Apply, develop and execute strategies in multi-step organic synthesis and purification of high-quality target molecules for biological screening. 
  • Adapt new technologies and solutions to program studies.
  • Work closely with medicinal chemistry facility director and other project team members in the design, syntheses, and optimization of compounds with improved potency, selectivity, together with improved ADME properties.
  • Prioritize synthetic chemistry efforts to ensure timeline adherence and project alignment to meet the medicinal chemistry facility and university goals.
  • Assist in preparation of formal reports to project team, patents, publications, and project planning.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired through completion of one or two years of post-bachelor degree work, such as a Master’s in the specific field of research employment; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in research methodologies, writing reports, supervision, software, data interpretation and handling in area related to research being performed; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and may require special licensing or certification in the field related to the area of employment.

Desired Qualifications

Ph.D. in synthetic organic chemistry or an M.S. with industry-like experience. Sound knowledge of synthetic organic chemistry (strategies and methods) would be considered a strength. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.  Works independently and leads from the bench.  Demonstrates creative initiative.  Results oriented with effective problem-solving skills.  Open to suggestions and able to critically evaluate and embrace new or different ideas.
