Brief Position Overview Under the supervision of Animal Research Manager and the Technical operations manager, the person in this position will perform duties relating to the care of livestock used in research and teaching. Responsibilities include: feeding livestock; cleaning livestock pens, assessing health of animals; assisting with research procedures; sterilizing supplies; decontaminating livestock pens and bio-hazard waste; supervise student employees, trains employees on all procedures and ensure compliance to all procedures; assist with collection of specimens, blood draws, operation of endoscopes and gas anesthetic machine Assisting in a laboratory preparation room sterilizing supplies and decontaminating contaminants; related duties as assigned.

Position Details

General Statement The Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology (MCB) is engaged in research, teaching, and service. The primary mission of MCB is to perform basic and applied research to achieve a better understanding of animal health and disease. Under the supervision of the Animal Research Manager, the person in this position will be responsible for the direct care of all livestock used for research and teaching. The facility manager is willing to train a willing candidate that may not proficient in performing the responsibilities.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Feeding livestock.
  • Daily health assessments of all livestock.
  • Maintain detailed records for each animal.
  • Supervise and train student employees in animal care duties.
  • Assist with research procedures, completing medical procedures such as venipuncture. Monitor anesthesia.
  • Operating sterilizers, decontamination of hazardous supplies and areas.
  • Understanding of biosafety levels and procedures .
  • Familiarity with breeding livestock.
  • Lambing and calving experience. The ability to work the necessary hours to successfully lamb or calve. i.e., nightshifts, weekends, holidays, etc.
  • Teach standard lab safety work practices.
  • Operation of skid steer, tractor, etc.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • One-year secondary education plus animal experience or an equal combination of education and experience.
  • experience working with animals.
  • experience in maintaining records.
  • experience with computers
  • experience training or teaching others.
  • Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Ability to recognize illness in an animal.
  • Experience handling bio-hazards.
  • Experience safely operating sterilizers
  • General knowledge of antibiotics.
  • Ability to administer medications.

    Position Special Requirements/Additional Information
    • May be on- call for after hour emergencies.
    • Have ability to cover weekend and holiday shifts if needed
    • Will have exposure to zoonotic pathogens.
