Summary

Performs responsible work in support of a research program in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine. The research focus of the Emerge Research Program (PIs Drs. Averill and Abdallah) is understanding the neurobiological and behavioral effects of stress- and trauma-related pathology (i.e., depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, suicidality, treatment-resistant symptoms) as well as the investigation of clinical outcomes and underlying neurobiological mechanisms of rapid-acting pharmacologic interventions (e.g., ketamine, psychedelic medicines such as psilocybin). Studies are generally in collaboration with Baylor College of Medicine and the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. 
The individual hired in this position will support research efforts within the scope of the established study protocols, adhering to all human subjects regulations as defined by BCM, the VA, and the federal government that pertain to the safe and ethical conduct of research studies. 

Job Duties

  • Reviews and adheres to eligibility criteria for admission of study participants based on goals and objectives of project, including medical chart review for clear eligibility exclusions. 
  • Completes in-person, telephone, and video (Zoom) screens for potential participants, including safety screenings for MRI participation. 
  • Schedules and coordinates study visits.
  • Assists in data gathering and other tasks including data collection, entry and auditing for accuracy. 
  • Supports participant recruitment and retention efforts to include BCM and VA in-person recruitment, community outreach and telephone calls, specifically working to recruit both Veterans and civilians with PTSD, depression, and suicidality. 
  • Administers and scores limited assessments to research participants under supervision. 
  • Responsible for the safe and ethical documentation and transmission of study data. 
  • Ensures that report forms are accurately documented and completed in a timely manner. 
     

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a Basic Science or a related field.
  • Two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preference for research assistants who have interest in longer-term (2+ years) role.
  • Bachelor’s in Psychology, Sociology or related field. OR relevant work experience
