Research Assistant Description
A 3rd or 4th year undergraduate or graduate student who is interested and familiar with Critical Race Theory, Black studies, Africana studies, education and anti-Black racism, Black studies in education, Quebec/Montreal education systems.
Position Summary / Responsibilities
Identify current organizations working on education for Black children in Montreal
Create a database of organizations with updated information that is verified through phone calls and check on the active status of all websites and social media
Conduct research through interviews with Black teachers in the EMSB and surrounding school districts and current/past students on what is needed to encourage more Black students to enter into teaching, what the barriers are, and what kinds of programs would support Black students to become teachers and retain them as teachers
Design and hold focus groups with teachers, community members, and students to create the Black Teacher Pipeline project
Design workshop to help student complete McGill applications/visit the department and hear from students/faculty
Qualifications Required (skills and abilities, education, language skills):
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Creativity and problem-solving skills
Community-oriented and able to reach out to and engage with diverse audiences
Being bi-lingual in French English is helpful
Being able to navigate the community/school ecosystem in Montreal will be of added benefit and use to this position
Familiarity with the various school boards in Montreal will be an advantage for this position
Education/experience requirements
Studying education with a focus on Black studies/anti-racism in education
Education leadership/education policy studies will be an added benefit
