Research Assistant/Communications Officer  

There is a vacancy for a research assistant/communications officer in the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Bergen. 50% of the position is for a fixed-term period of 2 years starting in December 2022, and 50% of the position is for a fixed-term period of 1 year starting in January 2022. Total employment as a research assistant cannot exceed two years.

The research assistant is a recruitment position where the main task is to be a supporting entity to the academic staff in their instructional and research endeavors. The position will provide the opportunity to gain insight into scientific work and methodology.

Job description:

• 50 % of the position is linked to: the Global Research Program on Inequality (GRIP) (gripinequality.org). The main tasks of research assistant/communications officer will consist of outreach activities including work with website (updating and developing programme’s website), editing of audio and visual material, social media (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram) and work with textual productions (writing summaries, organizing data material, publications and editing texts). In addition, person would be tasked with organizing workshops, conferences and other activities taking place at GRIP.
• 50% of the position is linked to: a project titled, “Habitable Air: Urban Inequality in the Time of Climate Change.” The project, which begins in 2022 and ends in 2026, is funded by the Research Council of Norway’s Program for Groundbreaking Research. The project focuses on climate change and unequal distributions of pollution in South Africa, Germany, and the United States. Applicants with research experience in the topical and/or regional areas of the project are particularly encouraged to apply.

ABOUT GRIP AND “HABITABLE AIR”:

Global Research Programme on Inequality (GRIP) is a newly established experimental and interdisciplinary research programme working for a better understanding of the multiple dimensions of rising inequalities and for addressing inequality related challenges. GRIP is a collaboration between the University of Bergen (UIB) and the International Science Council (ISC) and its secretariat is hosted by the Faculty of Social sciences, Department of Social Anthropology. “Habitable Air” is a project that addresses the under-analyzed relationship between three urgent issues: (1) the rapid growth of urban inequality; (2) the amplification of political divisions in major democracies; and (3) the increasing impact of pollution and global warming. “Habitable Air” is comprised of an international team of researchers, a filmmaker, a P.h.D candidate, and a post-doctoral fellow. 

Requirements and personal characteristics:

• The applicant must hold a master’s degree in social anthropology or another discipline within social or humanity sciences.
• Applicants with English and Norwegian proficiency are particularly encouraged to apply. Proficiency in written and oral English is required.
• As an applicant you should be able to work independently, have a considerable work capacity as well as an enthusiasm for project administration
• Good administrative IT-competence
• Experience in work with WordPress, website design and/maintenance, social media, video editing or visual representation is preferable
• Ability to work systematically and result oriented
• Good cooperation and communication skills
