The Research Assistant will assist with research in the area of clinical trials in psychiatry. The incumbent will be instrumental in the day-to-day conduct of clinical trials of novel treatments for major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder. A Research Assistant is required to recruit and interview potential trial participants, screening them for suitability to enter the clinical trials, and if suitable enrol them in the trials and collect data from participants at scheduled appointments as described in the trial protocol.

The incumbent will also be involved in data entry and data management; undertake management of biological samples; assist in recruitment strategies and participant contact and undertake general administrative duties involved in research conducted within the unit. These are multi-site clinical trials and the incumbent will work as part of a team of researchers, with small teams based at each site. The incumbent will be based at Barwon Health, Geelong.

Your key responsibilities will include:

• Contribution to the research effort of the IMPACT Institute through the following tasks:  coordinating invitations and appointments for study participants including recruiting new participants; conducting trial interviews; follow up of missed appointments; obtaining address details and necessary consent forms from study participants; conducting assessments and interviews using psychiatric rating scales and other validated questionnaires and collecting other relevant data; liaising with other care providers; and data entry
• Managing the research projects in which they are involved on a day-to-day basis by ensuring that data is being collected and stored appropriately including management of biological samples.
• Complete comprehensive documentation on participant files including Case Report Forms.
• Effective communication and liaison with other research staff within the IMPACT Institute, Deakin University, Barwon Health and other collaborating groups.
• Familiarity with the principles of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and a commitment to operate within these guidelines. Complete and undertake all documentation and procedural requirements of the research project, conforming to GCP guidelines.
• Maintaining strict standards of confidentially.
• Monitor the implementation of risk assessment procedure for each participant, ensuring that participant care is organised in a way that is appropriate to the perceived risk while maintaining the patient’s dignity and rights.  This should include a commitment to actively managing the environmental risks encountered.
• Any other duties as directed, commensurate with the scope and classification of the position.

To be successful, you’ll have:

• Completion of a degree or post-graduate qualifications in psychology, nursing, social work or other relevant discipline
• Clinical or research experience in psychiatry with a sound knowledge of current psychiatric principles and practices
• Demonstrated sensitivity and respect for research project participants including a good understanding of confidentiality issues
• Experience in clinical interviewing using psychiatric rating scales and other validated questionnaires for people with mood disorders*
• Previous experience in clinical trials (preferably investigator-initiated trials)*
• Familiarity with relevant disciplinary procedures and research guidelines.*
• Previous experience in data entry and management using REDCap.*
• Demonstrated skills in the publication of research journal articles, conference papers, report, or professional or technical contributions and / or demonstrated skills in the preparation of research manuscripts.*
• Experience in pathology processing (blood samples)*
