Position Overview

The Department of Anthropology and Archaeology in the Faculty of Arts invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator (PI), this position supports research on the African Stone Age, investigating how climate change and paleo environmental conditions influenced hominid dietary behaviour and stone tool use, and how these factors act as key drivers in human evolutionary research. This positions works closely with the PI, project team members, and group students.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Support the research group in administrative, logistic, and research areas
  • Manage project budget, and assist in purchasing of project items and reconciling of project accounting
  • Coordinate partnership internet connectivity, data repository, copyright issues, and access to information, publishing, and videoconferencing
  • Assist in management of PI and project calendars and schedules
  • Implement recruitment and screening of project students and participants
  • Develop and maintain organizational systems for storage and retrieval of samples and study materials
  • Facilitate project material dissemination and online presence by updating web-portal and social media sites
  • Help plan project workshops, meetings, and fieldwork
  • Facilitate conference participation and travel of project members and students
  • Maintain records (website, Excel) of all technical reports, publications, scholarships, conference presentations and posters from project members
  • Liaise and network with external institutions, companies, and agencies that may have an interest in study results
  • Investigate internal and external funding opportunities related to the study, and prepare grant proposals/applications
  • Assist in the preparation of reports to funding agencies
  • Assist in the preparation of scientific manuscripts, including archiving of data, and uploading of materials to open-access repositories
  • Correspond with stakeholders, including faculty members at other universities, representatives of industry and program managers in funding agencies

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent experience; post-secondary education is preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work in a team environment 
  • Excellent time management skills including an ability to prioritize work, to work under pressure, and to meet deadlines
  • Familiarity with statistical software programs
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision
  • Ability to learn new software and experimental testing equipment and procedures
  • Experience with University business systems and databases (e.g. PeopleSoft, Enterprise Reporting and e-Fin) is an asset
