In honour of Mr Mishka McIntosh, this position is co-funded by the McIntosh Family and Western Alliance to enhance community driven research activity and continue to develop the Community and Research Network (CARN), an interface for research and the community.

The Research Assistant will assist the CARN Central Committee and work with community members with a lived experience of mental and physical illness to upskill them to understand research, contribute meaningfully to research activities and outcomes and to create an environment of research culture within the Geelong community.

In addition to maintaining established links with CARN members, the research assistant will also focus on developing links with new members with a particular focus on expanding the membership to rural and regional stakeholders across western Victoria.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting the CARN Central Committee to engage with Members
  • Organising administration such as meeting agendas and the CARN newsletter
  • Assisting with the ongoing seminar series
  • Lived experience research training to be conducted in association with other partnerships
  • Building Community Evidenced-Based Practice
  • Linkages with other lived-experience networks and activities (e.g. Barwon Health’s CHIME, Western Alliance)
  • Ensuring effective communication and liaison with other research staff within the IMPACT, Deakin University, Barwon Health, other trial collaborating groups and Western Alliance member organisations. This will include attending relevant meetings and assisting with organising and managing meetings where requested.
  • Adherence to University policies and procedures, including but not limited to those relating to equal opportunity, occupational health and safety, risk and financial management, privacy, confidentiality, staff development and staff performance planning and review.
  • Perform other duties as required from time to time. 

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • Experience working in community liaison or engagement
  • A lived-experience of mental or physical illness as a consumer or a carer
  • Experience providing community training activities*
  • A Bachelor’s degree in nursing/allied health/psychology or similar*
  • Exceptional record keeping skills and attention to detail and demonstrated administrative skills including proficient use of Microsoft Office products.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity and respect for community members, health stakeholders and academic institutions.
  • A good understanding of confidentiality issues
