Job Description Summary:
Our team is at the forefront of clinical trials, exercise intervention trials and experimental physiology studies in both cardiovascular and cerebrovascular health in aging populations and those with chronic conditions such as stroke. We are recognized nationally and internationally for developing novel brain blood flow assessments during exercise. Dr. Billinger’s laboratory is integrated into the University of Kansas Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, which is a National Institute of Aging P30-designated national leader in Alzheimer’s disease research. We are seeking a Research Assistant to support our growing research enterprise.
The Research Assistant will support multiple investigations focused on exercise, cardiovascular measures and cerebrovascular function. We have collaborative research projects with the KU Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, Hoglund Biomedical Imaging Center, the KU Stroke team and the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Department of Cell Biology and Physiology.
Job Description:
Required Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in health-related field.  
  • Experience in exercise testing and/ or exercise physiology to oversee study visits. 
  • Competency in Microsoft Office applications and REDCap
  • Excellent communication and time management
  • Strong verbal and written skills
  • Detail oriented
  • Ability to meet timelines within a team environment
  • Ability to adapt, learn and be flexible
  • Ability to understand medical terminology
  • CPR certified or willing to obtain within 6 months of hire date.

Preferred Qualifications:

Prior experience: 

  • Exercise related research
  • Cardiovascular assessments
  • Ultrasound 

Job Duties Outlined:

Recruitment:

  • Pre-screen potential participant eligibility for currently enrolling in studies
  • Educates potential participants about the expectations and requirements of the study
  • Manage recruitment tracker

Scheduling:

  • Assist the study coordinator with scheduling of study visits, including but not limited to near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), exercise testing, ultrasound, cognitive testing, MRI and PET scans
  • Communicate with all parties involved including the participant and caregiver (when applicable) as well as the entire study team.

Evaluation, data collection and data entry:

  • Collect participant information
  • Follow protocols and execute standard operating procedures
  • Conduct physical assessments such as walking tests, submaximal exercise testing
  • Oversee exercise intervention visits and take vital signs
  • Willing to learn brain blood flow assessments using transcranial Doppler ultrasound, monitor blood pressure, heart rate and breathing during various stimuli
  • Assist the study coordinator in entering data into electronic database (REDCap) and other duties as needed.
