Position Responsibilities

Position Summary The Department of English at the University of Idaho seeks to hire an assistant professor of rhetoric and composition with a secondary specialty in technical writing. This tenure-track position has a standard 1/2 teaching load at lower- and upper-division levels, including graduate seminars (with a course release per semester for administrative work). The successful candidate will also serve as Director of First-Year Writing, a three-year term, with the possibility for renewal. We seek applicants with a secondary specialty in technical writing to complement a new BS and academic certificate in technical writing. Areas of primary specialization may include composition studies, critical pedagogy, rhetorical theory, digital/multimodal writing, and cultural rhetorics (such as queer rhetorics, feminist rhetorics, decolonial rhetorics, Native American and Indigenous rhetorics, African-American rhetorics, Asian and Pacific American rhetorics, or Chicanx and Latinx rhetorics). Applicants should address how they bring diversity and inclusion to the university, college, and department. We encourage candidates from historically underrepresented groups to apply.
The University of Idaho’s English department offers an undergraduate degree with concentrations in creative writing, linguistics, literature, and professional writing, as well as MA and MFA degrees. Starting in Fall 2023, we plan to launch a new BS focused on technical writing and a new certificate in technical writing, both of which will be offered in-person and online. The first-year writing program includes ENGL 101P (101 + a credit corequisite writing studio), ENGL 101, and ENGL 102. All faculty serve on committees at the department, college, and university levels. Continuing scholarly activity and publication are expected for tenure and promotion. The Director of First-Year Writing will work closely with the Associate Director of First-Year Writing, the Writing Center, and other department leaders. Specific responsibilities include:
· Overseeing the writing placement process.
· Developing and updating the first-year writing curriculum.
· Coordinating assessments of the first-year writing program.
· Teaching composition pedagogy to graduate teaching assistants.
· Supervising the first-year writing staff (including teaching assistants)
Unit/Department Summary The College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences is committed to equity and inclusion. The University of Idaho puts diversity as central to the school’s mission and responsibilities as the land grant university in Idaho (President’s commitment ). As a college, CLASS embraces and expands this mission. We are the largest and most diverse college at UI and are committed to building a just and equitable society.
