Registered Psychologist

This position is a part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).

In accordance with the Temporary Librarian, Administrative and Professional Staff (TLAPO) Agreement , this part time temporary position (0.5 FTE) has a prorated annual salary range of $35,467.50 – $58,892.50. This position is not eligible for benefits. This position has an initial appointment commencing approximately mid-May 2024 and ending early January 2025 (negotiable).

This is a temporary position covering a parental leave, commencing approximately mid-May 2024. Work will be part time 0.5 FTE (22 hours per week).

Location: This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person and work primarily located at North Campus, Edmonton.

Working for the Department

The Office of Advocacy and Wellbeing in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry looks after issues pertaining to the health and wellbeing of learners, residents, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows within the Faculty. The Office provides counseling on academic and personal matters, and advocates for learners and residents. Our aim is to help ensure that undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate learners are not distracted by health matters and are able to perform to the best of their abilities.

Position Summary

Working with the Associate Dean, Office of Advocacy and Wellbeing, the Registered Psychologist is responsible for providing effective and efficient professional psychological services to the University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry undergraduate, graduate student and resident population. The Registered Psychologist delivers counseling to students and residents who are experiencing personal adjustment and/or psychological problems that require professional attention.

Duties 

The Registered Psychologist is the major provider of psychological services to the student population in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry. Although therapy (individual, couple, and group) and crisis intervention services are emphasized, the Registered Psychologist conducts consultative training to University faculty and staff on psychological issues, may present workshops and in services to staff and students, and offers critical incident debriefs to those affected by distressing events which may take place.

The Registered Psychologist position implements psychologically based research and practice; participates in the OAW case review team; may assist in strategic planning and other initiatives for the Office of Advocacy and Wellbeing; participates and collaborates with other services on campus and off campus in order to facilitate the care and treatment of learners.

Minimum Qualifications

• Registered Psychologist and in good standing with the College of Alberta psychologists (CAP), and the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA.) (Registration with CAP is required to call oneself a Registered Psychologist, and to work at the UofA as a Registered Psychologist).
• Demonstrated clinical experience and training relevant to the treatment of a variety of mental health challenges, including but not limited to anxiety, depression, trauma, adjustment related issues.
• Familiarity and adherence to the Health Professions Act, the Standards of Practice, the Canadian Code of Ethics, and the Professional Guidelines for Psychologists.
• Knowledge of counseling theory, developmental psychology, social psychology, research design, statistics, personality theory, psychometric testing, ethics, career counseling, group counseling, cross-cultural counseling.
• Knowledge of the Policies and Procedures manual regarding such things as service limits and the Consultation/Intervention Protocol.
• Ability to both establish rapport with a wide variety of clients and create a process of change that will enhance the wellbeing of learners who access the service, and thus enhance their success in university.
• Ability to meet and consult as a member of a team of professionals about clients of particular concern or challenge.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s or Doctoral degree in Counseling or Clinical Psychology preferred, plus five years of professional counseling experience working with a diversity of mental health challenges and populations.
• Knowledge of the University of Alberta and Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry and its policies and procedures, community resources, and the ability to refer clients to those resources as required.
• Computing skills, with knowledge of, and proficiency in Microsoft Office, Zoom, Google docs.
• Knowledge of the academic advisors system of the University of Alberta and specialized services available to students.
• Ability to perform quantitative and qualitative research and carry out program evaluations · Knowledge and familiarity with the Medical Education Undergraduate and Postgraduate programs, as well as its policies and procedures preferred.
• Knowledge and familiarity with relevant organizations such as Physician & Family Support.
• Program, Alberta Medical Association, and the Canadian Medical Protective Association.
• Awareness of national mental health initiatives and programs in addressing medical learner distress and burnout.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
