Job Summary

Utilizes the nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to provide safe, therapeutic care
Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary and nursing teams
Carries out established nursing procedures and performs related duties as required
Performs nursing care for patients with more complex needs with assistance and supervision
Assists with the management of patient care administered by other members of the nursing team

Department Description

The Medical Intensive Care unit (ICU) provides care to complex critically ill patients and their families with severe medical conditions such as sepsis, acute lung injury, liver and renal dysfunction, acute pancreatitis, oncologic diseases and autoimmune disorders, liver dysfunction and liver / kidney / pancreas transplantation, critically ill obstetric conditions, and postoperative and complicated surgical patients.

This unit is comprised of a community of skilled, innovative, collaborative and caring critical care clinicians. The nursing staff has opportunities for specialty training and expertise in continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), chemotherapy administration, and end-of-life/palliative care. The critical care team includes nurses, physicians, respiratory care practitioners, a social worker, a nutritionist, a physical therapist and a pharmacist all with expertise in meeting the needs of critically ill patients and their families.

The Medical ICU has received multiple awards with the most recent being the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence (2010) and the Society of Critical Care Medicines Family-Centered Care Award (2009). Many nurses on this unit are recognized for receiving local and national honors and awards including five UCSF Distinguished Nurse Awards and AACN’s Excellence in Leadership Award. 

Nurses are active in improving the care of critically ill patients through innovative projects, evidence-based care performance improvement and clinical research.

Advancement of professional practice and education are priorities for our unit with opportunities such as a research journal club, monthly educational sessions, and active clinical practice, quality and patient safety, patient and family relations and professional development councils.

Required Qualifications

  • Two years of recent adult RN ICU and/or Medical/Surgical ICU experience
  • Active licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of California
  • Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
  • Active American Heart Association ACLS Certification
  • The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Health locations

License/Certification

  • Active Registered Nurse licensure in the State of California
  • Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
  • Active American Heart Association ACLS Certification
