Registered Nurse – Diabetes Educator

Your Opportunity:

The Calgary Rural Diabetes Clinic Nurse Educators work as a member of the local area health care team collaborating on the delivery of holistic, comprehensive care to meet the needs of individuals with diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia and their families. This specific opportunity is based out of Okotoks and may also support surrounding communities. The Diabetes Nurse Educator provides leadership in nursing assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care for the purpose of promoting, maintaining or restoring health, preventing illness, injury and disability. A significant portion of nursing care encompasses patient education/teaching and assisting with diabetes, hypertension, and cholesterol management. The Diabetes Nurse Educator provides care for the adult, in all stages of health and complexities of illness. The Diabetes Nurse Educator is accountable to the public for their own practice, which is monitored and regulated (Province of Alberta Nursing Profession Act, 1995). The Diabetes Nurse Educator is responsible for ensuring that practice meets legislative requirements set out by the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) and the code of ethics of the Canadian Nurses’ Association. The Diabetes Nurse Educator is guided by their level of education, expertise, experience, demonstrated skill level, Alberta Health Services policies and job description. Practices are in accordance with Standards for Diabetes Education in Canada and the Clinical Practice Guidelines for Diabetes, Hypertension, and Dyslipidemia. The Registered Nurse requires the ability to tolerate walking, standing, kneeling, bending, reaching and sustaining postures. Also required: lifting, pushing, pulling objects less than or equal to 50 lbs.

Description:

As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit Holders shall be paid $35.87/hour – $43.82/hour. Upon being entered into the register of Registered Nurses, the rate of pay shall be adjusted to the rate of pay applicable to a Registered Nurse in accordance with AHS/UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii) as applicable. Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support – Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). If you have not practiced as a Registered Nurse within the last five (5) years, completion of the following free courses is required: CRNA Medication Management – Chapters 1 – 4 (https://connect.nurses.ab.ca/home/%2Flearning-and-development%2Flearning-modules%2F) and the NextGenU Health Assessment Resources Certification (https://courses.nextgenu.org/course/view.php?id=271#section-0)

Additional Required Qualifications:

Current Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) and/or Diabetes Workshop for Healthcare professionals (Basic, Intermediate and Advanced) and/or Diabetes Educator Certification through Michener Institute of Education. Experience in Chronic Disease Management.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience using Connect Care. Ambulatory Care Experience.
