Registered Nurse

Job Summary

Under general supervision, guided by the policies and procedures of UCSF, the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG) and ZSFG 6M Children’s Center; and in the collaboration of the physician, staff, and administrative management, the Pediatric Clinical Nurse works independently to coordinate the clinical care of patients being evaluated at the ZSFG Multidisciplinary Assessment Center (MDAC) in 6M Children’s Health Center.  MDAC provides comprehensive evaluations for infants, toddlers, preschool-aged children and kids up to age 23. While children of all ages are evaluated at MDAC, the primary focus for the Pediatric Clinical Nurse are children ages 0-5 years. The Pediatric Clinical Nurse is a key member of the clinical team. The Pediatric Clinical Nurse will utilize a high level of clinical knowledge to triage patient referrals, coordinate patient evaluations, ensure efficient patient care flow, provide patient developmental education, and promote continuity of care for patients and their families through telehealth modalities and in person appointments.

The Pediatric Clinical Nurse will work collaboratively with members of the MDAC team in a multidisciplinary approach with nurse practitioners, psychologists, occupational therapists, speech and language pathologists, child development specialists, psychiatrists, pediatricians, staff, residents, medical students, interns, etc.  The Pediatric Clinical Nurse will function primarily as the liaison between the MDAC team, health care providers in the CHN network, SF community clinics, and family community service providers. This person will communicate with ancillary support services to identify and resolve problems to maximize the efficiency utilization of resources. The Pediatric Clinical Nurse utilizes the nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to provide safe, therapeutic developmental care. This person carries out established nursing procedures and performs related duties as assigned. Nursing care for pediatric patients with more complex needs is provided by the Pediatric Clinical Nurse under the supervision and with support of the nurse practitioner.   

Specifically, the Pediatric Clinical Nurse role is to triage referrals, obtain medical/family/psychosocial histories, collect vitals, and provide education and case management for pediatric patients and their families with regard to developmental services. S/he consistently projects a professional and courteous demeanor and demonstrates investments in the success and overall movement forward of MDAC.

Approximately 80% of the population receiving care at MDAC are Spanish-speaking, thus requiring the Pediatric Clinical Nurse to be bilingual in Spanish both written and spoken. S/he shall comply with the ZSFG Hospital and Telephone Standards.

The Pediatric Clinical Nurse Adheres to departmental goals, objectives, standards of performance, and policies and procedures. S/he ensures compliance with quality patient care and regulatory compliance, and provides necessary vision and leadership to develop and achieve goals and objectives that are congruous with the mission and vision of the organization.

Department Description

The Department of Pediatrics at San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH) provides outpatient and inpatient (including neonatal intensive care) services to 13,000 patients annually consisting of approximately 35,000 annual clinic encounters and 10,000 inpatient days. Management of the department’s outpatient clinic is by the clinical chief. The outpatient clinic or Children’s Health Center (CHC) handles infants to adolescent preventive care through most emergent medical complaints. The department’s inpatient services include its 18-bed children’s ward and a 43-station neonatal intensive care unit. SFGH Pediatrics is the base for the Child/Adolescent Sexual Abuse Resource Center (CASARC).

Required Qualifications

  • Clin Nurse I: Possession of a baccalaureate degree and the legal requirements to practice as a Registered Nurse as determined by the California Board of Registered Nursing; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
  • Clin Nurse II: Possession of a baccalaureate degree and the legal requirements to practice as a Registered Nurse as determined by the California Board of Registered Nursing and six months of clinical experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
  • Experience as a Care Coordinator or Nurse in Child Development
  • Bilingual English-Spanish
  • Knowledge of community service providers including but not limited to Golden Gate Regional Center, San Francisco Unified School District, California Children’s Services, Instituto Familiar de La Raza, Family Developmental Center, Head Start Programs, La Raza Community Resource Center, Family Mosaic Program, Child and Adolescent Services, Infant Parent Program, Child Trauma Research Program
  • Knowledge of health care insurance systems including but not limited to Medi-Cal, Fee for Service Medi-Cal, managed care Medi-Cal (specifically SFHP)
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the range of treatment required by the patient
  • Demonstrates ability to provide age-appropriate care. Check age-specific group(s):

xNeonatal (Birth – 1 year)
xPediatric (1 – 12 years)
xAdolescent (13 – 18 years)

  • Demonstrates competent use of standardized terminology and clinical
  • Understands the procedures for medical emergencies, code blue, and other emergency/disaster situations.
  • Completes annual competency testing as specified by the individual practice
  • Demonstrates courtesy, common sense, and follow-through in all telephone communications, maintaining the Telephone Standards as established by UCSF Medical Center and ZSFG
  • Uses effective communication skills with patients and staff
  • Demonstrates proper telephone techniques and etiquette
  • Shows sensitivity to differences of culture
  • Demonstrates a positive and supportive manner in which patients perceive interactions as positive and supportive

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficient in Epic, Microsoft Office Applications
  • Experience with Autism and other behavioral diagnosis
  • Excellent documentation, clinical and follow-up skills; ability to set priorities, work independently, work well under pressure and with deadlines.
  • Experience with applying the nursing process to assess protective and predictive factors that influence the development and health of patients across the pediatric years
  • Experience working with diverse patient population

License/Certification

  • Active Registered Nurse licensure in the State of California
  • Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
