Reader in Engineering Education

We are seeking an enthusiastic individual with appropriate disciplinary and educational leadership experience for post of Reader on the King’s Academic Education Pathway (AEP). There will be a particular focus on the launch and management of the MEng group projects and the ideal role-holder will have an exciting and innovative strategic vision for delivery of these flagship activities together with the ability to operationalise and implement this.  

We are a general Engineering department with undergraduate courses in Electronic and General Engineering. Our students follow a core curriculum for the first two years which includes 4 multidisciplinary group design projects which support our developing pedagogy through ideation, integration, inspiration and innovation. Students are taught in our new student learning spaces at the heart of Strand Campus which includes makerspace and laboratory spaces. 

This role will work in partnership with the Professor of Engineering Teaching and Learning as well as engaging with students, industrial and community partners in co-creation activities to develop a culture of imaginative innovation in engineering education.  

As well as the delivered teaching, the role-holder will build scholarship which enhances the student experience across the department and wider faculty and college: identifying and leading initiatives to enhance our education offering. You will therefore be a leader in pedagogic innovation and curriculum development with consistently outstanding teaching practice acting as a role model to others. This is a full-time  post

  • To undertake a significant departmental administrative role managing and enhancing educational activities with particular focus on leadership of the capstone projects.
  • To provide leadership of aspects of the ongoing development of the Department’s Educational strategy, curriculum and distinctive pedagogy
  • To carry out, encourage and lead the development of innovative approaches to teaching and learning and to motivate and mentor colleagues on their teaching practice
  • To contribute to scholarship in the fields of engineering education and to build an external profile of activity which enhances the reputation of Kings Engineering
  • To deliver teaching of the highest quality, which is motivating, engaging and memorable. The postholder will be expected to achieve consistently high levels of positive feedback on their module(s) and/or sessions
  • To run workshops, training sessions and discussion groups on developing teaching and learning practice in Engineering Practice open for all staff and teaching assistants.
  • To be part of the education leadership team in the department and to represent the department on Faculty and College committees and working groups
  • To demonstrate a proven commitment to inclusion, equality and diversity.

Essential criteria  

1.       Subject-specific qualification in one or more engineering disciplines 

2.       Industrial or research experience to inform a general engineering curriculum 

3.       Ability to lead and manage educational activities and to undertake a significant administrative role 

4.       Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion in practise and activity 

5.       An understanding of, and desire to enrich, the student experience 

6.       Excellent task management skills both for self and others – ability to meet deadlines 

Desirable criteria

1.       PhD in relevant subject or significant equivalent experience 

2.       Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy  

3.       Chartered engineer or ability to register as a professional engineer 

4.       Detailed knowledge of UK academic standards and quality frameworks 

5.       Experience of Industrial or community-based networks and collaborations 

6.       Emerging external recognition, national or international engineering education activities
