Reaching Higher Mathematics Programme Tutor

Job Purpose

To tutor secondary school pupils studying for Higher and Advanced Higher qualifications in Mathematics, to improve academic attainment in this subject and improve the pupils’ prospects of progression to Higher Education. To raise awareness and aspiration of Higher Education and provide the pupils with key skills required for successful HE study.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • To tutor secondary school pupils in Mathematics, delivering tutoring sessions for small groups of 3-5 pupils.
  • Working with core WP staff and school contact teachers, contribute to the development and use of appropriate course materials to ensure that content and methods of delivery meet learning objectives.
  • Utilising SQA course specifications, content held on West Online School and programme materials, design a series of tutoring sessions, working with school contact teachers, to ensure support of the school curriculum and target the areas of most relevance to the individual pupils.
  • To mark pupils’ work and provide feedback to enable improvement in performance over the course of the programme.
  • To record pupil attendance and submit records weekly to the Widening Participation office and relevant secondary school(s).
  • To maintain regular contact with fellow tutors, Widening Participation and school staff and to inform WP and school staff of any problems encountered during sessions.
  • Working with WP staff, contribute to programme evaluation.
  • Submit end-of-programme reports on pupil progress to the WP Office.
  • Work flexibly and prepared to deliver sessions online.
  • Conduct other duties as required to support the WP team in successfully widening participation to Higher Education and the University of Glasgow.

    Knowledge/Qualifications 

    Essential

    A1 Undertaking an undergraduate degree in relevant subject specialism

    A2 Appropriate level of knowledge and expertise in the subject specialism in order to deliver course material

    A3 Sound understanding of the learning skills required for successful study in Higher Education

    Desirable

    B1 Current knowledge of the Scottish secondary school system

    B2 Current knowledge of the Scottish HE and FE systems

    Skills

    Essential

    C1 Excellent oral and written communication skills

    C2 Excellent interpersonal skills

    C3 Ability to work independently and as part of a team

    C4 Ability to work remotely

    C5 Time management skills

    C6 Ability to accept collegiate responsibilities and act accordingly

    C7 Demonstrate ability to communicate and lead school level students and university applicants in a friendly, student focussed manner

    C8 Effective I.T. skills and experience of relevant programmes e.g., Microsoft packages (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Teams), Moodle, or similar

    C9 Comfortable with accepting change and demonstrable ability to work flexibly

    C10 A willingness to be accessible to other team members

    C11 Friendly and student-centred

    C12 Enthusiasm for wider access and education

    Experience

    Essential

    E1 Broad teaching experience at undergraduate, FE or school level

    E2 Proven track record in teaching

    Terms and Conditions

    Salary will be Grade 6, £30,502 – £34,308 per annum, pro-rated to the number of hours assigned to, and worked by, you.

    This fractional post is for a minimum 25 hours and is fixed term to 22 December 2023.
