This Major Programme comprises individual programmes on food and agriculture, human health, water resources, environment and radiation technologies. These programmes are supported by laboratories in Seibersdorf, Monaco and Vienna. The Major Programme’s objective is to enhance the capacity of Member States to meet basic human needs and to assess and manage the marine and terrestrial environments through the use of nuclear and isotopic techniques in sustainable development programmes.The Division of Physical and Chemical Sciences is responsible for assisting and advising Member States in research and development for the nuclear sciences, especially the physical and chemical sciences. Specifically, the Division provides support to Member States in the following fields: production of radioisotopes and radiolabelled products for applications in health care and industry; radiation source applications; research reactor utilization; applications of accelerators and nuclear instrumentation; nuclear and atomic data for applications; controlled nuclear fusion and isotope hydrology and geochemistry.Main PurposeAs a member of the project management team, led by the Head of the Section, the Radiation Technology Specialist plays a vital role by providing expertise and services in planning and implementing the Agency’s Radiochemistry and Radiation Technology Programme. By leveraging principles and innovation in radiation technology, he/she contributes valuable knowledge to develop, optimize, and implement radiation techniques and processes that enhance quality, safety, and efficiency across various applications.RoleThe Radiation Technology Specialist is: (1) a programme developer and implementer, contributing to planning and developing the Agency’s subprogramme in Radiation Technology Applications in Health Care, Industries and the Environment ; (2) a scientific secretary/technical expert, planning and leading complex Technical Meetings; (3) a mission leader, planning and leading moderately complex review missions; (4) a technical and project officer, evaluating complex Technical Cooperation (TC) projects and promoting, coordinating and evaluating moderately complex Research Projects (CRPs) in the continuing widespread application of ionizing radiation, by improving the technology in various fields.Functions / Key Results ExpectedProvides technical and strategic advice and services to IAEA Member States through the design and technical backstopping and support for the implementation and appraisal of projects aimed at application of existing and modern radiation technology systems, including radioactive-source and machine-based technologies.Plans and leads innovative research to implement more efficient techniques and configurations for material modification, waste treatment, and product development. This ensures that industry practices remain aligned with technological advancements and evolving societal needs.Plans and leads scientific and technical missions to Member States including preparatory and follow up visits and the assessment of their needs; provides technical input and coordinates the preparation of end-of-mission reports.As a contributor to policy development and priority setting in the field of radiation technology, designs and conducts quality assurance programs to monitor processes, analytical studies, participates in advisory committees and task forces, and provides technical input to the policy and standards development of regional and international bodies.Evaluates TC projects, develops actions plans; plans, organizes and participates in seminars, workshops, expert missions and training courses.Prepares materials for publication as Agency documents or in relevant scientific journals.
