About AQTAt AQT we build quantum computers. Founded in Innsbruck, Austria, in 2018, we aim to bring quantum technologies out of the laboratory environment and turn them into everyday products. Our goal is a quantum computer based on trapped-ions, that is installed in normal IT infrastructure and can be readily operated from any PC or laptop. We provide quantum technology for research laboratories and supercomputing centers. To our industrial customers, we offer quantum solutions through partnerships with leading quantum software firms. For our team in Innsbruck, we are now looking for a skilled and motivated individual to join us as a Quantum Systems Engineer.Your roleAs a Quantum Systems Engineer, you will be a key contributor to the growing range of AQT quantum systems. As such, you will be responsible for developing, setting up, and operating trapped-ion quantum computers and relevant test devices. You will be involved in the entire operational lifecycle – from requirements gathering and design to development, assembly, testing, deployment, and maintenance. For this position we are looking for someone who enjoys operating quantum computers and skillfully applies concepts from experimental physics, applied physics, and engineering, as required to operate a state-of-the-art, cutting-edge trapped-ion quantum computer.Responsibilities:

  • You will be part of a team with a mission to develop, set up, and operate trapped-ion quantum computers and relevant test devices
  • Assembling and operating trapped-ion quantum computer hardware
  • Characterizing trapped-ion quantum computers using state-of-the-art experiments and measurement techniques
  • Analyzing and optimizing the performance of our quantum computers
  • Collaborating with stakeholders inside and outside the system operators team
  • Continuously improving yourself and how we do things

Required Skills:

  • Master’s degree in engineering, physics, applied physics, physical chemistry, or related fields (or demonstrated experience) is mandatory; PhD in experimental physics is preferred
  • Experience in atomic, molecular, and optical physics experiments (e.g., lasers, laser cooling, laser spectroscopy, optics, microwaves, vacuum systems)
  • Knowledge and experience in areas such as linear and nonlinear optics, photonics, high-frequency electronics, cryogenics, ultra-high vacuum systems, opto-electronics, electrodynamics, and/or lasers
  • Hands-on experience with trapped-ion quantum computing or other quantum computing platforms is a plus (superconducting qubits, spin qubits, NV center systems, photonics, etc.)
  • An independent mindset and readiness to learn and apply new software and hardware skills.
  • Fluent communication and writing skills in English
  • Creativity and a desire to work in a multicultural and interdisciplinary team
