Position Details:

University Marketing and Communications is seeking 3 Publications Coordinators to join our team.

Summary of Duties:

This position is responsible for the development of print and electronic publications created by or submitted to Design and Printing Services and provides counsel and direction for communication officers across the WSU system to achieve communications goals. This position collaborates with Design and Printing Services staff in the following activities: estimating, content development/editing, graphic design, print production, HTML email design/coding/testing and sending, and graphic design and animation for the web. The position ensures milestones and deadlines for each project are being met. This position is responsible for the final approval on content and graphic design for University print and digital publications.
 

This position works with specialized software in a complex workflow so must be highly conversant in the vocabulary and processes of graphic design, digital/offset printing, bindery/finishing tasks, addressing/mailing, shipping and digital (HTML) delivery.
 

Additionally, this position provides input to the oversight and direction for the University’s comprehensive publishing program in support of the University’s strategic goals.

60% Project Management:

  • Oversee publications projects through photography, design, printing, and distribution, to ensure timely production and distribution of University publications.
  • Conceptualize ideas for publications and direct the creation of original content and design.
  • Work with outside vendors to procure and schedule printing and finishing services not available in-house.
  • Review publications for proper messaging, presentation, and accuracy per University brand standards and guidelines.
  • Provide highest level of customer service throughout publications process. Respond promptly to customer inquiries, project modifications, and reporting requests.

25% Audience and Objectives:

  • Consult with communications officers and other University colleagues to determine audience and objectives for the University system’s highest profile communications. Assess needs and provide appropriate information, options, and solutions to achieve customer goals and outcomes. Ensure that messaging is in compliance with University marketing and branding goals.
  • Provide direction and consultation to University design, editorial, and photography teams to accomplish messaging, design, and content for University publications. Relevant work includes print and electronic media. Review copy for a wide variety of work submitted for printing and electronic distribution; for WSU style, correctness, clarity, and presentation; confer with departments regarding discrepancies or errors, suggest rewriting of material as necessary.

10% University Brand and Marketing Support:

  • Maintain current knowledge about the University’s teaching and research programs, strategic plan, and marketing strategy. Ensure that strategic messaging points are incorporated into the University’s publications.
  • In collaboration with University Marketing and Communication’s staff, develop and execute outreach efforts including development, design and execution of websites, marketing events, and client-focused educational programs to promote all product and service offerings available through Design and Printing Services.
  • Build current customer relationships and expand customer base.

Required Qualifications:

Positions require a Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications or related field and two (2) years of professional level writing/editing experience which has included word processing computer applications and a demonstrated knowledge of graphic arts principles. A Master’s degree in a relevant field may be substituted for up to (1) one year of the required experience.

  • Skills in coordinating multiple projects simultaneously, problem solving, and working independently.

  • Skills in adapting to changing priorities.

  • Experience with print and Web development and distribution methods.

  • Working knowledge of creative design tools.

  • Proven experience working collaboratively with creative teams in a end-to-end digital and print production environment.

  • Working knowledge of print publishing concepts and applications in a complex publishing setting.

  • Strong creative, conceptualization, communications, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

  • Good knowledge of the English language.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of marketing principles in an educational setting.

  • Experience working in higher education.

  • Experience working in book publishing.
