Provost & Vice-President (Academic)

Advancing human and societal health and well-being.

McMaster University is located on the traditional territories of the Haudenosaunee and Mississauga Nations and within the lands protected by the “Dish With One Spoon” wampum agreement.

Ranked among the top 100 universities globally and home to over 65 research institutes with more than 37,000 students, McMaster prides itself as a hub for innovation, discovery, and growth. McMaster is focused on advancing human and societal health and well-being – in its community and around the world.

As one of Canada’s most research-intensive universities, faculty work across disciplines to discover creative solutions to complex problems, help to improve people’s lives and build a Brighter World for all. The University encompasses a vast range of disciplines and is a welcoming and inclusive community that values collaboration and interdisciplinarity while supporting and respecting its members and their contributions to the University’s shared mission and goals.

The Provost and Vice-President (Academic) provides vision and leadership for all of McMaster’s academic activities. Reporting to the President and working closely with the members of the senior administration, the Provost promotes and ensures high-quality academic programming that builds on McMaster long tradition of innovative education and problem-based learning. The role is also responsible for the recruitment, support and retention of excellent faculty and students. Serving as the Chief Budget Officer, the Provost oversees the University’s academic planning and associated budget processes, ensuring the relevance and fiscal accountability of the University-wide budget. The Provost also provides academic leadership of key institutional initiatives and strategies, including advancing Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility; and working in partnership with Indigenous colleagues to address barriers, resolve areas of concern and continue to advance the University’s Truth and Reconciliation initiatives.

As the successful candidate, you are an accomplished and active researcher, educator, and an inclusive, collaborative leader with demonstrated commitment to meeting the needs of students and faculty. You have a proven record of senior academic leadership success with experience in planning and budgeting, building effective and engaged teams, and promoting Inclusive Excellence, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. Your demonstrated institutional leadership experience, focus on operational excellence, fiscal acumen, and ability to enhance the functioning of a large, complex, decentralized, multi-campus academic portfolio, will be highly beneficial. You foster a culture that attracts and retains students, while ensuring transformative and holistic student experiences and well-being are prioritized. Additionally, you bring the ability to represent McMaster on a national and global stage, advocating for the university’s academic, research, fundraising, community, government relations and international partnership goals. As Provost, you will be appointable at the rank of full Professor in one of the disciplines represented at the University.
