Project Specialist

The Division of Environmental Health in the Department of Preventative Medicine at the University of Southern California is seeking a motivated, inquisitive, and detail-oriented Project Specialist to help develop and undertake a research project pertaining to long-term effects of environment on brain using neuroimaging techniques. Under the direction of Dr. Megan Herting the Project Specialist will support the day-to-day activities of two new research studies funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Job Description:

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree with 2 years of experience in research and advanced data analysis OR a Master’s Degree in a relevant science or related fields with quantitative coursework involving statistical or epidemiological analyses (e.g. neuroscience, public health, psychology/social work, computational engineering, biostatistics). Strong interest in environmental neuroscience, health disparities, and big data research preferred. This position will require training and knowledge of statistical analyses and a willingness to learn and apply technical skills towards big public health, neuroscience, and environmental health datasets. Must have the ability to multitask and work efficiently on a team.

• Experience working with statistical package (R, STATA) and/or computer programming and coding experience (i.e. Python/BASH/Matlab) strongly preferred.

• Previous hands-on experience in technical writing, manuscript preparation, and/or grant preparation a plus.

• Knowledge or training in with environmental exposure science and/or neuroscience/psychology ideal.

• Familiarity with multilevel modeling and/or structural equation modeling or a willingness to learn

Responsibilities Include:

• Creation of quality control and analysis protocols for big data
• Performing data wrangling and cleaning tasks and creating descriptive tables
• Creating data visualizations using software such as Photoshop or Illustrator
• Using R statistical packages to perform and interpret linear modeling and statistical testing
• Writing and presenting technical statistical reports and journal articles
• Reviewing relevant scientific literature
• Assisting with manuscript and progress report preparation
• Administrative duties, such as scheduling, attending, and presenting at regular study meetings with project collaborators
• Maintaining study related documentation
• Additional tasks as needed

Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree
Minimum Experience: 2 years
Minimum Field of Expertise: Directly related education and experience to be able to advise on project procedures and analysis techniques
