Position Summary

MCW International Research Scholar

Purpose

A Project Appointment-STUDENT (PA-STUDENT) classification is utilized for a foreign national who is at MCW as a student for the purposes of furthering his or her education. In order to qualify for this position, student status must be proven.

Attributes of a Project Appointment:

  • PA-STUDENTS are temporarily brought into an MCW laboratory because they desire to supplement their education, which they are primarily receiving at an institution other than MCW.
  • There is an established date of termination, and there is no expectation of continued or permanent employment.
  • The total duration of the Project Appointment cannot exceed four years.

Primary Functions

Performs tissue culture procedures.

  • Maintains cell lines by feeding, splitting, and passaging cells. Taks care of cryopreservation and storage
  • Fractionates lymphocyte subsets using positive and negative selection and differential centrifugation techniques
  • Performs lymphocyte proliferation, cytotoxicity, apoptosis and differentiation assays
  • Evaluates CAR-T dependent cytotoxicity and programmed cell death

Performs in vivo mouse studies on malignant tumors of the B and plasma cell lineage.

  • Recovers blood and ascites from anesthetized mice and harvests tissue and organ specimens from euthanized mice
  • Monitors mice on a regular basis for tumor onset and incidence
  • Genotypes offspring, relying mainly on PCR methods

Performs cell biological and immunopathology procedures.

  • Performs direct/indirect tissue/cell immunofluorescence and immunoperoxidase staining, FACS analyses, cell sorting, and associated data preparation and analysis
  • Performs basic protein isolation and purification, and SDS-PAGE-based analyses of purified and recombinant proteins, including Western blot analysis
  • Utilizes ELISA and other techniques for detection of lymphokines and other products

Performs procedures in the field of recombinant DNA/RNA methodology.

  • Assists in preparation of RNA and DNA from viral, eukaryotic, bacterial cell cultures, whole blood, and tissue samples.  Performs routine assays involving nucleic acids.  This includes the generation, labeling, and proper handling and disposal of non-radioactive probes for Southern, Northern, RNAse protection assays and for the generation and screening of cDNA libraries.
  • Performs PCR-based assays with appropriate techniques to avoid cross-contamination.
  • Interprets DNA sequencing results
  • Assists in accurate record keeping and maintenance of laboratory databases, such as plasmids/vectors, probes, glycerol stocks, oligonucleotide primers, cDNA and PCR products, and fluorescent antibodies

Assists in communication of experimental work and refining of new techniques.

  • Retrieves any background or supporting material from literature searches
  • Assists in the preparation of manuscripts/grants by organizing data and preparing photographs, computer-generated figures and tables for publication or presentation as directed
  • Identifies experimental goals
  • Obtains necessary specimen/materials and runs experiments according to information obtained
  • Evaluates and records outcome of experiment based on goals and submits for investigator’s inspection

Contributes to smooth functioning of the laboratory.

  • Maintains a clean work area
  • Interacts with personnel from other laboratories in a productive, professional manner
  • Accommodates new personnel and techniques
  • Completes work within time guidelines specified and discusses progress and any problems as needed
  • Assists in teaching procedures to new personnel
  • Assists in developing and monitoring quality control parameters, including those relating to institutional guidelines for handling /disposal of hazardous and radioactive materials
  • Troubleshoots problems with procedures and updates written procedures as needed
  • Attends staff/laboratory and research meetings appropriate to assigned projects

Preferred Schedule:

Full-time role with expectations for coverage during core business hours and flexibility required as necessary to accommodate business needs.
