Position Summary

The Program Director of Nursing Workforce (PDNW) primary function is responsible for development and implementation of innovative and evidence-based nurse recruitment and retention strategies that enable nurses to begin, develop and evolve their careers throughout City of Hope (COH).

Key Responsibilities include:

• Understands and applies the City of Hope Code of Conduct, Code of Organizational Ethics, and Scope and Standards of Oncology Nursing Practice. The PDNW is a role model a culture of service excellence with emphasis on collaboration, collegiality, ethics, diversity awareness and cultural competency, quality of care, and resource utilization.  The PDNW possesses integrity, assure confidentiality, and promote the image of the professional nurses internally and externally. PDNW achieve results through evidence-based strategies, creative problem solving, and utilizing networks to determine best practices.
• Demonstrates emotional intelligence as role models for healthy and professional behaviors in alignment with the Department of Nursing professional practice model and the principles of Relationship Based Care (RBC).
• Actively applies RBC principles to retention and recruitment activities with focus on diversity, equity and inclusion. Maintains focus on developing and retaining diverse nursing population; role models inclusivity; tracks and monitors progress on improving recruitment and retention of underrepresented groups in nursing.
• Manages related databases and dashboards as required. Engages in proactive, data driven actions designed to stabilize and expand the nursing workforce at COH.
• Develops and leads a Nursing Workforce Committee. Serves as resource to improve participation in recruiting and retention initiatives.
• Serves as a resource for and collaborates with Program Director and Site Coordinator for Nurse Residency and Nurse Transition Fellowship Programs.
• Participates in Academic-Practice Collaborations.
• Assists with all recruitment efforts and retention functions supporting nursing positions with special emphasis on targeted patient care areas with low nursing engagement, high turnover, COH growth, and generational impacts.
• Assists with establishing long term objectives for nursing recruitment and retention, researching factors that may impact success
• Assists in developing promotional materials in all media. Creates and maintains positive presence of COH nursing in social media.
• Participates in Shared Governance and applicable professional organizations (both locally and nationally). Actively networks.
• PDNW role models and actively leads collaboration and teamwork to achieve positive working relationships with all nurses and advanced practice providers with attention to well-being.
• Responsible for developing guidelines to help nurses navigate career growth and advancement opportunities within the healthcare system.
• Promotes and develops opportunities for nursing community recognition from nomination through dissemination of award opportunities. Liaison with community agencies who perform nursing recognition events.
• Collaborates with Communications Dept on internal and external materials to highlight nursing activities and successes.
• Partners with the Talent Acquisition and Nurse Leaders to evaluate COH nursing workforce requirements in support of targeted recruitment efforts.
• Develops innovative, EBP strategies to improve nursing pipeline for COH (i.e. Nursing Student Extern Program). This includes advertising, promotion, and selection of candidates with tracking of conversion to new RN graduate. Strategies should take into consideration Future of Nursing 2020-2030 report and include methods to promote a diverse pipeline of candidates.
• Serves as a liaison with HR Talent Acquisition and Employee Communications in developing recruitment strategies, marketing materials, and events to attract new nurses.
• Actively seeks out, supports planning, and attends recruitment events both internally and externally, as appropriate.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

• Master’s prepared nurse. If bachelor’s degree is not in nursing, then Master’s in nursing required. If bachelor’s degree in nursing, then Master’s may be in related field.
• Five years nursing experience required – at least two years must be in oncology; at least two years in a leadership capacity.

Required Certification/Licensure:

• Current California RN license
• Current National certification (Oncology or Leadership are preferred certifications)
• Valid CA driver’s license

Preferred education experience and skills:

• Recruitment and retention activities (example: Recruitment and Retention Committee membership); experience with labor unions.
