Who we are

The Colonias Program was founded in 1991 by State Legislature and is housed within the College of Architecture. Our mission is to develop and deliver solutions to enhance the quality of life for residents living in colonias and economically distressed areas in Texas. These are residents living without one or more of the major infrastructure such as potable water, paved roads, sewage system, storm drainage, and/or electricity.

The TAMU Colonias Program, through an asset-based participatory community development approach, builds the capacity of local residents to actively participate in creating sustainable solutions to local challenges.

The Program Coordinator I, under general supervision, is responsible for assisting the Director and San Antonio state office staff with data management, data base management and program reporting. Responsible for community development projects that benefit rural residents along the border. Position calls for excellent networking with partners and ability to communicate with organizations on fulfilling the outcomes that will help residents along the border. Assists in the Texas A&M University Colonias Program Community Health Worker Academy to expand its reach along the border. Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or any equivalent of education and experience.

  • Two years of experience in data management, program reporting and community development.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of data management, data base management, and presentation skills.

  • Interpersonal and communication skills and ability to plan and organize effectively.

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

  • Ability to build community development projects.

  • Ability to handle and manage confidential information.

  • Ability to problem solve and have good analytical skills.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master’s Degree.

  • Experience in higher education.

  • More than three years of experience in data management, program reporting and community development.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills to communicate data results from technical to non-technical audiences.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Community Development – Responsible for data reporting to the Director of the Texas A&M University Colonias Program on the needs of rural residents to be able to fulfill community development in rural communities along the border. Assures that the mobile unit branch is developing in rural communities and expands along the border. Develops new partnerships and maintains good working relationships with county administrators, staff, city and state agencies. Assists with new community development projects in collaboration with partnerships along the border. Assists rural communities in developing capacity and building sustainability. Assists in the Texas A&M University Colonias Program Community Health Worker Academy to expand its reach along the border.

  • Data Management – Responsible for assisting the program’s efforts to collect, analyze, validate and visualization of data for programming. Assists staff in performing data-related tasks. Coordinates and maintains data collected. Prepares reports for Director by analyzing and interpreting data and presentations. Compares and analyzes statistical information to identify patterns, relationships, and solve problems. Assists staff on how to properly organize findings and interpret data collected.

  • Program Reporting – Reports to the Director of the Texas A&M University Colonias Program on data and community development through program reporting. Works with staff on standardizing program reports. Maintains and submits reports on time. Presents to the Director clear and concise goals, trends, performance outcomes, and evaluation for programming.

  • Travel – Travels occasionally in border areas. Performs other duties as assigned.
