Professor – Sustainability

MANCHESTER METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY

Professor – Sustainability

To lead our continuing growth as a global research and education institution, we are committed to expanding our professoriate across areas of research strength. If you have the ability, confidence, and determination to drive groundbreaking research in your area, this is your chance to join us within the area of Sustainability, build a research portfolio that matches your vision, and to achieve real-world impact. We ranked fifth nationally for our impact in Earth Systems and Environmental Science and sixth for Engineering (REF 2021).

About us

With over 4,000 staff members and around 40,000 students – including some 6,000 choosing to study for a postgraduate qualification – we are a big institution with even bigger ambitions. We are proud to be an integral part of the great city of Manchester, but our impact reaches around the globe. Currently, we offer more than 250 postgraduate taught programmes and have 14 centres of research expertise.
We are committed to providing excellent education to transform our students’ lives, and to delivering high quality research with powerful real-world impacts and benefits, as evidenced by our highly successful REF outcome: 30% of our research, across more than 740 academics, has been rated as world leading. And 91% of our research impact is world leading or internationally excellent (REF 2021).
Now, we are making a significant investment in realising our objectives to excel in education and to build on our research reputation. Alongside our £400m campus and University infrastructure upgrade, we are investing in people: making Manchester Metropolitan the logical next step for talented, ambitious senior research academics at their peak.
About the opportunity
You will join the UK’s number 1 sustainable university (People and Planet University League 2021, ranking in a top three position since 2013), with the opportunity to work on projects backed by multimillion-pound funding from organisations like the EU, the UK government, and UK Research and Innovation. Through our academic and research specialisms as well as our sustainability initiatives and performance, we are determined to play our part in the global effort to limit climate change, reduce inequality, and to protect our planet and all that lives upon it.

More than 90 engineers and environmental scientists collaborate on sustainability research that has a powerful impact. In REF 2021, we ranked fifth nationally for our impact in Earth Systems and Environmental Science and sixth for Engineering covering expertise in international aviation emissions policy, conservation management and smart embedded systems. Meanwhile, we’re consistently a top five UK university for knowledge transfer partnerships (KTPs), working with SMEs to create new products and systems that increase productivity whilst reducing carbon emissions.

You will have the freedom to tailor your development and build your academic reputation. Alongside expanding on your own vision and expertise, you will play a key role in mentoring others, promoting a cooperative, intellectually curious research culture and, as a member of the leadership community, supporting our long-term research strategy to enrich students’ lives while having a positive effect on our world. You can count on our full support; from the financial backing you need to the collegiate atmosphere and extraordinary quality of life that Manchester Metropolitan can offer.
