The School of Healthcare Sciences at Cardiff University is a dynamic and forward-looking School and is seeking outstanding applicants of international reputation for a Professorial position in an area related to Physiotherapy. The successful candidate will have an established international record of high-quality publications and a substantial record of collaborative research grant income that compliments the School Research themes which are:
The school is a leading UK provider of nursing and allied health professional education. The School’s research is recognised for its quality and is directed at informing improvements healthcare delivery. The Physiotherapy programme is ranked 3rd in the UK (Complete University Guide 2023). In REF 2021 the University is ranked 14th in the UK on research power and 19th on quality, 11th for the reach and significance of our impact, and 16th for environment and culture. We are ranked first in Wales. The School’s recent REF submission included significant increases in the number of staff returned, external research income and PhD completions. Further development of research capacity is a priority for the School and we would look to the appointee to contribute to this, both in terms of personal research and mentoring and support for colleagues.
This position would suit a candidate with an excellent track record of attracting external funding, high quality research publications, and demonstrable research impact, making a major contribution to academic and societal issues in patient care.

Candidates will demonstrate high level collaborative leadership and motivational skills with an inclusive and engaging team-leading ethos, with the ability to positively communicate and influence a diverse stakeholder group. You will have experience of developing and delivering research support programmes as well as the development and implementation of strategy and policy with an understanding of academic research and governance. Developing research capability and capacity in physiotherapy and the broader research portfolio aligned to the themes is one of the key aspects to this role. Target setting for income, line management, teaching and collaborative working with the Professional Heads and Directors within the School, especially those linked to Physiotherapy, will also be important.
The post holder will work closely with the School’s research theme leads and contribute to general research activities and management within the School and where appropriate the wider University. A significant contribution to teaching, innovation and enterprise is expected.
We welcome excellent applicants from relevant disciplinary backgrounds who can demonstrate application to Physiotherapy research and teaching. This position is full-time, and open-ended. Successful candidates will be employed on a Teaching and Research career pathway.
Salary:
Band 1 £69,135 – £84,274 per annum
Band 2 £85,958 – £102,729 per annum
Band 3 £104,784 – £120,365 per annum

Job Description
JOB PURPOSE
Professors at Cardiff University are expected to have a very strong national and international research profile, a successful record of accomplishment in research -related income generation, of successful PhD supervision , and evidence of supporting the development of vibrant healthcare research environment. Professors play a central role in shaping and delivering, the University’s research and knowledge exchange strategies. In addition, Professors are expected to provide research mentoring to colleagues in the School at all stages of their careers as well as supporting the development of research mentoring processes, within the School, Biomedical and Life Science Colleges and the wider University. Professors have a responsibility for leading research, generating research income and mentoring colleagues for making external funding applications.
MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Adopt a leadership role in research within Physiotherapy, the School, and in the wider University. This will include leading on the development of new collaborative approaches to research and research led teaching and promoting research activity within the school.
2. Make a strong contribution to the Schools and University plans for future REF submissions, including development of impact cases and producing 4* publications and enhancing the research environment.
3. Work with the appropriate Professional Heads and Directors to support the implementation of the research plan to develop research capacity and capability within Physiotherapy, embedding a culture of research enquiry and collaboration
4. Obtain funding to undertake independent and collaborative research of the highest quality that is consistent with the school strategic plan of enhancing its national and international profile. Support others to obtain external funding to increase research capacity.
5. Disseminate research through international outlets and high-quality publications
6. Supervise, mentor and support PhD students to ensure their effective research development.
7. Enhance the reputation of the School and University regionally, nationally and internationally in relation to research and innovation ensuring appropriate communication of research activities, opportunities and successes.
8. Contribute to curriculum development. Programme organisation and delivery and teaching and assessment activities in relation to Physiotherapy
9. Act as an internal and external examiner for PhDs and Chair PhD and masters viva voce examinations.
10. Undertake line management duties and performance development reviews and mentorship or academic or other staff.
11. Contribute to, support or lead on opportunities for interdisciplinary research/teaching activity in order to creates or maintain opportunities for knowledge transfer.

Qualifications and achievements
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
1.Demonstrate an international reputation as evidenced by substantial and sustained publication in high quality international journals, (at least 3*, with some 4*), and well in excess of that required for a REF submission.
2. Substantive contribution to significant, high quality external research grant income generation and proven experience of leading and managing research grants.
3. An excellent track record of research leadership and building and sustaining successful national and international relationships leading to collaborative research partnerships of relevance to Physiotherapy, including Industrial partners and policy makers.
4. Understand the key drivers for research development, research and academic governance, implementation of research strategy and policy in areas relating to Physiotherapy, health, social care and medicine,
5. Experience of successful research degree supervision and research degree examining.
6. Experience of curriculum development, including developing and delivering research programmes and initiatives, programme co-ordination, personal tutoring, teaching and assessment.

1. High level team leadership and motivational skills with an inclusive, and engaging team building ethos and focus to enable working with a diverse stakeholder group.

1. Higher Education qualification and /or fellowship of HEA
2. Relevant professional qualifications (HCPC registration)
3. Proven ability to adapt to the changing environments of the Higher Education Community
4. Evidence of expertise in a field of Physiotherapy relevant to the school
5. Member of prestigious academic, learned societies, governmental, NHS and /or Industrial Scientific Advisory boards and Committees.
