The University seeks to appoint a professor within Translational Pain Pharmacology to the Department of Drug Design and Pharmacology to commence as soon as possible.

Job description

A professor at the Department of Drug Design and Pharmacology is a committed and responsible member of our academic community providing research, education, innovation and outreach activities to the society.  The successful applicant will be an active member of one of our interdisciplinary research clusters and disciplinary teaching groups. We aspire to facilitate research across complementary and synergistic research disciplines. The research clusters provide a departmental framework for scientific collaboration at high international level, and facilitate an inspiring scientific working environment.

The applicant should have a strong background in translational pharmacology investigating pain mechanisms and potential treatments, for details see “Desired qualifications”. Additionally, a proven track-record of developing academic courses and educations at the pre and post graduate level is required.

The professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:

  • Research, including publication/academic dissemination of results to the scientific community and to the general public
  • Develop, organize and conduct research-based teaching, including associated examination, within the field of pharmacology and toxicology
  • Research leadership, including guidance and supervision of students and researchers
  • Engage in outreach and/or innovation activities both within the Department and towards academia, the clinic and industry in general
  • Being a committed and dedicated member of the Department’s academic community
  • Obligation to share knowledge with society, e.g. participation in public debate
  • Academic assessments

Required qualifications

Six overall criteria apply for professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for the overall assessment of candidates. The applicant must be able to document:

  • original academic production at high international level, including considerable contributions to the development of the academic discipline within: research, teaching, innovation and outreach
  • leadership and/or management functions, e.g. engagement in the university’s external academic activities, as well as knowledge and technology transfer
  • development, organisation and conduction of research-based teaching within pharmacology and toxicology as well as supervision of students

The professor is also required to possess good interpersonal and communicative skills.

Desired qualifications:

(i) An established record in experimental pharmacology with focus on pain research. Examples include studies of in vivo pain models investigating pathophysiology and pharmacological treatments.

(ii) Demonstrated ability to establish a research program with focus on experimental pain research with translational aspects.

(iv) Capacity to instigate and participate in collaborative science at the international level involving scientists across scientific disciplines and sectors including the pharmaceutical industry and clinical departments.

(iii) Demonstrated ability to facilitate and support the development and implementation of in vivo pharmacology methodologies and infrastructure including providing support with regards to ethical permissions, experimental designs and execution.

(v) Documented expertise in development of courses and teaching in a broad range of topics within pharmacology, toxicology and drug safety, from the molecular to the systems level.

Terms of employment

Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations.

The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2020.

After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointments Committee.  All applicants are then immediately notified whether their application has been passed on for assessment. The Dean then appoints an expert assessment committee in order to make an assessment of the selected applicants for the specific position. Selected applicants are notified of the composition of the committee and each applicant has the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that relates to the applicant him/herself.
