About the opportunity

The Sydney Conservatorium of Music (SCM) is seeking a Professor who has a national or international reputation for excellence in the area of vocal performance and artistic research. This role is for a Professor of Practice focusing on the relationship between the Opera / Vocal workplaces and tertiary education. This position plays a significant role contributing to the academic endeavours of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music’s Vocal Department including contributions to curriculum and performance research. It contributes to fostering a culture of excellence through their own professional performance and pedagogical expertise and through guiding students towards success through cultural leadership in voice and opera. A Professor maintains and builds their reputation by actively contributing to vocal performance practice, academic debate, policy development and innovation within the University and beyond.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • maintain reputation for academic vocal performance excellence, which includes

  • making original and innovative contributions to the advancement of performance and pedagogy within the discipline of vocal studies which are recognised as outstanding, nationally or internationally

  • maintaining a performance profile which meets University expectations and standards and enhances the reputation of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music- including high level performances, innovative musical practice, with an international reputation for excellence.

  • maintaining quality, standards and excellence in all education, performance and artistic outputs

  • ensure outstanding teaching and learning outcomes, which includes

  • coordinating and developing curricula and programs within the SCM which enhance the University’s standing as a national leader in vocal education

  • engaging in high-quality teaching and learning experiences which meet the University’s expectations and standards for education

  • ensuring vocal pedagogy and learning outcomes are related to vocal industry expectations

  • leading developments in improving education quality through participation in School education committees or taking on educational leadership roles

  • contribute to the education and administrative activities of SCM

  • contribute to a positive workplace culture within SCM

  • contribute to the strategic direction of the SCM as articulated through the School’s Strategic Plan

  • engage and contribute beyond the University

About you

We are looking for a Professor of Practice – Todd Chair of Vocal Studies who possesses:

  • extensive professional experience in the field of Opera and vocal performance.

  • a national or international reputation for excellence in vocal performance/ vocal pedagogy/ administration and evidence of recognition within the broader music performance community

  • a sustained record of excellence in teaching and learning, as evidenced through successful student outcomes, demonstrated impact on student learning, recognition through awards/prizes and recruitment of students

  • demonstrated teaching experience in vocal studies

  • experience in people leadership within the musical sector, including demonstrated success in supervising and/or mentoring others towards success

  • ability to inspire students in a range of learning contexts (individual, ensemble).

  • demonstrated understanding of teaching stylistic approaches and the ability to teach vocal students from diverse backgrounds with evidence of students who have continued into successful performance roles

  • national/international professional connections in the area of vocal performance.

Term and remuneration

The Professor of Practice – Todd Chair of Vocal Studies will be a fractional (0.6 FTE), fixed term, 3 year appointment. The successful candidate will be offered a competitive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.
