Position Summary

Job Description

The Professor of Practice assists in the oversight of and teaches part-time graduate students in the McKelvey School of Engineering’s Sever Institute. Under the direction of the MHCOE Professor of Practice/Program Director, this position focuses on all teaching and educational activities for the program, particularly the instruction and retention of diverse student populations in on-campus and online excellence graduate and non-credit programs and ensuring the quality of these programs.

This position is part-time at 80% FTE. Hours may vary to provide coverage of classes and events. Occasional evening/weekend programs and activities; events may occur outside of traditional work hours.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Program Curriculum:

  • Teach courses based on the program curriculum using industry expertise and unique professional experience and in a manner that advances student knowledge.
  • Responsible for maintaining an updated/relevant curriculum as it relates to degree topic. This may involve, but is not limited to, research and engagement with user groups, industry leaders, and other academic/higher education organizations.
  • Propose changes to the current curriculum to a program committee.
  • Ensure that Sever’s Assistant Director of Academic Student Services has a current syllabus on file for all courses offered in the program. Ensure each syllabus has the WU policies on Code of Academic Conduct, Sexual Assault, Bias Reporting and Mental Health.
  • Collaborate with external individuals and organizations to foster student opportunities for innovative practical experiences.
  • Engage in Sever courses as instructor, guest lecturer, course coordinator, etc. and assist in maintaining student contact and support of instructors.

Program Faculty:

  • Assist in the implementation and maintenance of a relevant, high quality curriculum.
  • Assist in the hiring/vetting/recruiting faculty to teach in the program that are experts in their field of topic.
  • Provide support in the monitoring and evaluation of the performance of the faculty teaching in the program. This may involve, but not limited to, class sit-ins with evaluations, reviewing student evaluations, and participating in faculty meetings for the faculty to ask questions and provide feedback of the program.
  • Ensure other faculty are knowledgeable of Wash U rules and regulations regarding academic integrity, grading, FERPA, classroom policies, book orders, etc.
  • Substitute for other teachers due to teacher travel (or coordinate with other faculty).

Student Recruitment and Program Promotion:

  • Assist in providing program information to prospective students, conduct interviews and assist in making final decisions on admission to the program.
  • Facilitate promotional events involving marketing the program to prospective students. These may include, but not limited to, conference attendances, informational events, and other promotional discussions/reviews.
  • Engage Alumni to recruit new students and guest lecturers, create networking opportunities.
  • Coordinate with outside organizations to create opportunities for student projects, case studies, internships, and employer recruiting.

Student Advising:

  • Maintain regular office hours and availability for students to discuss questions regarding the program, course content, or suggestions of courses to take in the future.
  • Approve course substitutions, intent to graduate, independent study, and discipline/failure to perform paperwork.
  • Ensure that all education-related student discussions are properly documented within student files.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in healthcare administration, operational excellence, business administration, or similar.
  • Five years of experience as a high-level healthcare administrator.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, presentation, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in relationship building and management at a senior level across diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Strong creative, communication, and writing skills.
  • College-level teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse groups, including students, faculty, staff, and University counterparts who direct advising activities.
  • Goal-oriented, results-focused self-starter with the ability to work autonomously and confidentially; ability to make independent decisions, set/attain goals, and follow through with projects.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, including ability to learn about and speak to in-depth on the graduate program in Healthcare Operations Excellence.
  • Commitment to being part of a dynamic, growth-oriented culture.
  • Possess a process-centric, data-driven, and results-focused outlook with a bias toward action.
  • Comfortable in a dynamic, action-oriented environment with the capacity to listen carefully, think logically, learn quickly, and work effectively.
  • Collegial, with the ability to work, influence, and communicate effectively with internal and external partners in a team setting.

Salary Range

Base pay is commensurate with experience.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree.
  • Three to four years of related experience.
