About the role

The University of Leicester is one of the top 200 universities in the world and top 30 in the UK according to the Univjobs (THE) World University Rankings 2022.  The School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences is expanding rapidly, and aims to build upon our REF 2021 performance (94% of our research outputs were recognised as internationally excellent within Unit of Assessment 11 (UOA 11), Computer Science and Informatics) and be ranked in the top 25 by GPA in UoA 11 in REF 2028.

The School intends to further strengthen its links with several key partners in the University, including: the Leicester Institute for Precision Health, the Leicester Institute for Environmental Futures, Space Park Leicester and the College of Life Sciences, including the £26.1M Leicester NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (for example, the School is a key partner in the £2.5M UoL UKRI Hub Self-learning Digital Twins for Sustainable Land Management). The school is a founding member of the College of Science and Engineering’s Centre for AI, Data Analytics and Modelling, and aims to lead a future UoL research institute in Data Science.

We are looking for two Professors in the areas related to Artificial Intelligence and Data Science to join us in realizing these aims.

About you

With a PhD and an established international reputation as a scholar, you will be able to demonstrate research and teaching achievement in one or more of the fields of expertise below:

  • Core areas of Machine Learning and AI including:
    • Image processing and recognition
    • Natural Language Processing
    • Trustworthy AI
  • Data and Knowledge Engineering including:
    • Ontology-based data access, integration, and exchange
    • Ontology formalisms and models
    • Knowledge graphs and open linked data
    • Knowledge representation languages
    • Reasoning, including many-valued and fuzzy logics
  • Autonomous systems, including bio-inspired autonomous systems.

You will be able to evidence this through external grant capture, publications in peer reviewed journals and other relevant outputs, with a clear forward plan for your research that complements the existing specialisms within the school. With a track record of training and mentoring research students and experience of building effective collaborative relationships, you will have a commitment to high quality teaching, ensuring our students get the best experience possible.

As a Professor in the School, you will be expected to demonstrate leadership, development and delivery of research and teaching in your respective areas as well as contributions to the management of the school, college, and university.
