Position Summary/Purpose of Position: The University of Maryland, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources is seeking applications and nominations for an outstanding scientist, educator, and administrator to serve as Chair of the Department of Environmental Science and Technology. The Department was formed in 2006 and has developed integrated teaching, research, and extension education programs that focus on ecological technology design, ecosystem health, soil and watershed science, natural resources management, and wetland science. The Department strives to advance fundamental environmental science and to lead in the development of novel ecological technologies. Our faculty includes international and national leaders in the fields of soil science, ecological engineering, wetland science, bioremediation, and natural resource management. Professors in ENST are committed to enhancing society’s relationship with the environment by improving conservation and management of natural resources, assessing the impacts of humans on ecosystems, designing and implementing naturally-based technologies, and elucidating the effects of environmental conditions on human health. The department also seeks to educate students on the fundamentals of environmental science, while instilling a deep fascination and intellectual capacity to work in environmental science fields. The Department currently has 25 faculty members and offers BS, MS, and PhD degree programs for approximately 300 undergraduate and 50 graduate students. The Chair is the chief administrative officer and provides leadership for the faculty, staff, students, and programs of the Department. The Chair is responsible for all aspects of the Department operations including faculty, staff, student, budget, and facilities. The Chair represents the Department to all constituencies, both internal and external of the University of Maryland. The Chair reports directly to the Dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources as the leader of one of six academic departments in the College. The Department’s annual operating budget is approximately $12-16 million, two-thirds of which is derived from external competitive grant sources. It is a priority for the Chair to expand the portfolio of external grants and actively develop new sources of support for research and educational programs.
Minimum Qualifications: The successful candidate must (1) hold a Ph.D. degree in a field related to the Department’s academic programs; (2) have outstanding academic credentials suitable for appointment to the faculty tenured at the rank of Professor; (3) have demonstrated exemplary leadership in administering a large, multidisciplinary, and diverse faculty with a variety of appointments and assignments; (4) exhibited expertise in developing innovative programs and obtaining funding by building creative partnerships; (5) have a demonstrated ability to manage personnel, budget and facilities; and 6) have a deeply ingrained passion and understanding of environmental education, environmental research, and community engagement.
Preferences: The successful candidate will be a senior academic leader who will provide strategic vision for the advancement of the Department. The Chair will champion the Department’s mission to promote understanding and conscientious management of natural, agricultural, urban, suburban ecosystems and the interactions among air, water, soil, organisms, and people. The Chair will strive to ensure that the Department of Environmental Science and Technology continues its excellence and continues as one of the top undergraduate and graduate programs in environmental science in the nation; a center of excellence for extension education and outreach relating to environmental quality; and focal point for interdisciplinary collaboration that serves as the nexus for environmental science research, teaching, and extension education.
