The School of Social Sciences is consistently ranked among the best social science schools both nationally and internationally. It is the largest school in the Faculty of Arts and one of the largest consolidated schools of the social sciences nationally. Interdisciplinary teaching and research collaboration is strongly encouraged.

The School of Social Sciences offers a wide-ranging undergraduate program and a variety of postgraduate degrees in Anthropology, Criminology, Human Geography, Politics and International Relations and Sociology. A major focus of our teaching is to help students become responsible and informed global citizens.

The School is also a place of vibrant research activity and has research strengths focused on social and environmental transformations. The Social and Political Sciences Graduate Research Program provides doctoral training that equips students to understand and respond to complex legal, political, social, cultural and economic problems; developing the necessary skills and expertise needed to advance knowledge for the public good and lead the next generation of social change.

Human Geography at Monash has produced some of Australia’s leading researchers, policy makers and practitioners who are, individually and collectively, shaping local, state, national and international agendas on delivering more sustainable and just futures. We have a strong research culture, led by a dynamic group of researchers focusing on diverse societal and governance responses to address critical global challenges. Our research attracts national and international competitive funding, excellent PhD scholars, and routinely informs our teaching programs which explore geographical challenges associated with steering societal, industrial, and governmental dimensions of sustainability transitions.

The Opportunity

The Associate Professor/ Professor will play a leading role in the School Executive in the School of Social Sciences. This includes an ability to bring innovative teaching methods and concepts into the classroom and increase the School’s research capacity related to societal and governance challenges posed by climate and environmental change, within the discipline of Human Geography. In line with the Monash Impact 2030 Strategic Plan, the appointment will be expected to work across the Arts Faculty and wider University in developing research and foster external collaborations with relevant organisations.

Reporting to the Head of School, responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Actively engage in original and collaborative research that leads to high-quality refereed journal publications or outputs with high level academic or commercial publishers
• Foster research excellence through procuring competitive research grants, leading significant projects and working with other staff to develop research projects.
• Supervision of PhD students and postgraduate students engaged in coursework and research projects
• Acting as subject coordinator and Chief Examiner, which includes a range of administrative functions, the majority of which relate to the subjects the academic teaches
• Contribute to academic and administrative leadership within the faculty by participating in the development of policy and strategy
• Maintain and broaden collaborative partnerships with relevant faculties and departments/schools within the University and community
