Summary

The Thoracic Surgery Section Head is responsible for oversight of the clinical, research, and educational aspects of the Section as well as guiding ongoing strategic planning and maintaining strong financial performance. Fostering a culture supporting diversity and inclusion is of the utmost importance and the preferred candidate will demonstrate a proven track record of success in this domain. The preferred candidate will also have a strong track record of mentorship and faculty development.

Thoracic Surgery includes Thoracic Surgery at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System and University of Michigan Health – West (Wyoming MI). Our annual clinical volume consists of over 4,000 clinic visits and over 1,100 operative cases across two sites within Michigan Medicine. The scope of our clinical practice encompasses all aspects of general thoracic surgery, including but not limited to thoracic oncology, benign foregut diseases, airway surgery, transplantation, end-stage lung disease and extracorporeal life support.

The Section is fortunate to have a roster of 6 clinical faculty, 1 research faculty, and 20 staff members. Our faculty hold 6 Endowed Professorships and 3 Director level leadership positions within the health system.

The Department of Surgery has a diverse, robust research portfolio with  strengths in health services, educational, translational, and clinical research. Annual research funding has averaged $11.6 million over the previous three years with 23 extramurally funded investigators. Thoracic Surgery faculty collaborate closely with faculty colleagues in several core research areas, represented by the Center for Basic and Translational Science, the Center for Healthcare Outcomes and Policy, the Center for Surgical Training and Research, the Center for Global Surgery, and the Center for Surgical Innovation.

Thoracic Surgery has a both an accredited integrated 6-year program and traditional thoracic fellowship, in close partnership with the Department of Cardiac Surgery.  Our faculty also are deeply invested in the general surgery residency, which has consistently been rated #1 amongst large public hospitals and #1 in the Midwest by Doximity and US News & World Report. 

The preferred candidate will be clinically active in general thoracic surgery. Duties also include teaching medical students, house officers and fellows in clinical and didactic settings. The preferred candidate will be expected to establish an independent research program by successfully acquiring external funding as principal investigator, publishing and presenting results.
