Primary Purpose of Department The Department of Theatre inspires students to expand their vision of the world and themselves through study and practice of theatre. The Department offers the B.A. in Theatre with concentrations available in applied theatre, design and technology, performance, theatre education, and directing, dramaturgy and dramatic writing. Our student-centered, community-engaged education in theatre fosters the development of cross-trained artists who are prepared to participate in professional theatre as well as any profession that places value on imaginative thinking, collaboration, and communication skills. Aligning with the university’s commitment to open-access education, we integrate the values of equity and inclusion to drive vibrant intellectual inquiry, ethical and informed community engagement, and innovative creative research practices.

Description of Work

Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Tenured and Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate goals.
Teaching, Advising, Curriculum and Instructional Development – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, advising and consultation, directing student research, curriculum and instructional development, and grading student work.
Scholarly Research, Creative, and Other Professional Activities – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in expanding the knowledge base of her/his academic field by conducting research or engaging in other creative activities as appropriate to the faculty member’s discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to research may include but are not limited to: research/creative activity that generates new knowledge and/or synthesizes and/or integrates existing knowledge, publication, an on-going agenda for research, scholarly, and creative activity, and are expected to seek extramural support for their work.
Service to University, the Public, and the Profession – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to: service to the administration and governance of the University, public service, and service to the profession.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities The Shakespeare Chair will teach two (2) courses per academic year in the Theatre Department and one (1) in the English Department. He/she/they will work with other Theatre and Design faculty on Shakespeare campus productions as well as promote Shakespeare and Shakespeare-in-Performance at the University and in the larger Charlotte community.
Minimum Experience/Education

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience The successful candidate will hold a terminal degree in Theatre, English or related field and have a record of significant professional activity suitable for appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, as well as a proven record of academic and professional leadership.

Special Notes to Applicants The University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications from senior specialists in Shakespeare and performance to fill the endowed tenure-line Robinson Distinguished Professor of Shakespeare Chair in the Department of Theatre with affiliate appointment in the Department of English. The successful candidate will have strong credentials in Shakespeare scholarship with associated expertise in acting, design, directing, dramaturgy, voice, or other production-related specialties suitable for engaging students in the dynamics of performance. The Robinson Professor will be expected to continue to contribute to Shakespeare scholarship, to the Theatre and English Department’s Shakespeare curriculum, and to the University’s theatre season. The ideal candidate will be able to outline a dynamic and relevant research agenda and effectively work with a diverse community, faculty, and student body, particularly in the Theatre Department’s productions. He/she/they will participate in the University’s mission of creating an inclusive and equitable culture. Ph.D., D.Phil., M.F.A. or other relevant terminal degree required.
