Purpose

The Archivist will be responsible for accessioning, preserving, arranging, describing, and making accessible the Tarlton Law Library’s archival collection.  The library’s archives includes records of enduring value created by The University of Texas School of Law, as well as the papers of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Tom C. Clark and the Uniform Law Commission,  collections of several Texas Supreme Court justices and federal judges, and many University of Texas School of Law alumni, faculty, and deans.
The Archivist works in the library’s Special Collections Department, under the supervision of the Deputy Director and Head of Public Services, and in collaboration with the Rare Books Librarian, the Acquisitions and Special Collections Librarian, and the Reference Associate. 

Responsibilities

  • Physically process archival collections and create finding aids based on local and national archival standards (EAD and DACS) and contribute to standardizing processing practices across archival collections. Assess collections and ascertain need for restrictions in compliance with FERPA, privacy laws, and donor restrictions of individual collections. Determine processing priorities of archival collections in consultation with the Deputy Director and Head of Public Services. Assist with collection acquisition and communications with donors.

  • Facilitate patron access to archival materials through the creation of scholarly web exhibits and finding aids, digital preservation, and development of collections in Tarlton’s digital asset management system. Hire and supervise digitization assistants and coordinate large-scale digitization projects.

  • Provide research and reference support for law students and faculty, and the wider University community, for the archival and special collections held at Tarlton Law Library. Staff the special collections office, ensure patron compliance with library policies, and monitor patron use of special collections. Handle requests for copies of materials from the archive.  Assist with outreach initiatives and library tours.

  • Create and maintain documentation, workflows, and reports related to archival projects and practices. Oversee organization of collections, file management, and departmental record-keeping.

  • Represent the department in meetings of University-wide working groups related to archives and digital preservation and participate in relevant professional organizations.

  • Other related responsibilities and functions as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Masters degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution.  Two-years of professional experience in an archival or special collections library environment.  Experience processing archival collections.  Experience with digitization initiatives and digital projects.  Knowledge of current practices in archival preservation, management, digital asset management software (such as CONTENTdm), and emerging technologies and their application in academic libraries, archives and special collections.  Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with Encoded Archival Description (EAD).  Knowledge and understanding of archival descriptive standards, particularly Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS). 
Applicants must have a strong service orientation and an interest in innovation. Applicants must have a demonstrated exemplary work record, professional demeanor, strong interpersonal skills, and excellent oral and written communication skills. Applicants must have excellent organizational, time-management and analytical skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a team.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with Texas Archival Resources Online (TARO).  Experience working with legal or law-related archival collections.  One or more years of supervisory experience. Knowledge of and experience with Machine Readable Cataloging (MARC), Dublin Core, HTML, XML, and oXygen. Experience with archival collections management applications such as ArchivesSpace and AtoM. Experience creating digital and physical exhibits.

Salary Range

$60,000 + depending on qualifications

Working Conditions

May work around standard office conditions. Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation, use of manual dexterity. Lift and move standard office files and supplies. Wear appropriate office attire; accept supervision. Work hours may include occasional evenings, weekends and some holidays during peak periods to meet deadlines. On-site work is the normal expectation for this position

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
