Professional Graduate Writing Consultant

High Point University is currently seeking a Professional Graduate Writing Consultant. Writing Center consultants are kind, careful, and responsive readers for all High Point University writers (student, faculty, or staff) at any stage of the writing process. This part-time position is to assist graduate students seeking writing help support through the Writing Center. The consultant will work alongside the student to develop strategies for improving their writing regarding their respective assignments, expectations, and writing needs or genres. They will not edit papers for students and will be held to the highest standards of academic integrity. The consultant must be available 15-29 hours per week. However, hours will depend on volume and will be given as needed by appointment. Evening and weekend availability is preferred and virtual modality is required.


Education, Experience and Training:

Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree in related area preferred. The ideal candidate will have coursework, experience, or training in the following areas: advanced composition, rhetoric, literature, English Education, English language learning, and writing centers.

Knowledge, Skills, Ability:

The person seeking this position must have strong written literacies, interpersonal skills, verbal communication, reasoning ability, and be able to maintain the confidential nature of services provided.  Person must be able to review papers from various subject areas.  A working knowledge of citation methods and genres common to graduate students is required.

Physical Requirements:



Position requires tutoring students in various courses and experiences offered by the University. Developing student writing skills and creating a positive learning environment are required. Communication with the Writing Center Director on the progress of students tutored is required.  Performs other duties as assigned.


The consultant reports to the Writing Center Director.


Consultant will be responsible for working with writing center students on a weekly basis. Person must be engaged and proactive with students while on duty.
