Job Description:

The Stage Supervisor at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee (BCB) serves as the deck carpenter and deck electrician for all department performances. They serve as the fly console operator, perform dimmer and channel checks, repairs and services scenic or prop items, and serve as the safety captain for backstage operations. The Stage Supervisor ensures the functionality, maintenance, cleanliness and safety of stages, workshop, orchestra pit and surrounding areas. They attend all dress rehearsals and performances, and hours range from 55-60 hours per production.
As part of the Performance Services department, the Stage Supervisor reports to the Technical Directors and Stage Managers, and leads student crews.
This is a part-time position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

● Lead student crews in preparing stages, orchestra pit and surrounding areas before dress rehearsals and performances 

● Perform or assist with dimmer, channel, and sound checks as necessary prior to dress rehearsals and performances, and coordinates repairs or adjustments as needed with lighting and sound equipment ● Monitor the VESDA and haze levels in a show for safety of the performers onstage 

● Operate motorized rigging console as programmed by the Technical Director and called by the Stage Manager (and may be asked to make small changes during the run of a show) 

● Serve as the safety captain for all actions on stage while present, under the supervision of the Technical Director and Stage Manager 

● Per the Technical Director, perform small repairs to scenery and props as needed 

● Submit technical reports to the Stage Manager following dress rehearsals and performances ● Open and close the theater and associated spaces for performers and crew 
 

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS: 

● BA in Theater or equivalent work experience 

● 2-4 years practical theatrical experience 
 

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED: 

● Expert knowledge of stage operations, standards, and practices 

● Knowledge of scenic carpentry and furniture repairs 

● Knowledge of theatrical lighting systems, electric and electronic design 

● Knowledge of sound systems and theatrical audio reinforcement is a plus 

● Knowledge of audio-visual equipment including projections and QLab is a plus

● Experience in stage automation and show control is necessary, but not mandatory 

● Knowledge of standard and safe rigging practices and applications 
 

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: 

● Troubleshooting and problem solving skills 

● Punctuality, dependability, and ability to work independently 

● Strong leadership and teamwork skills 

● Valid driver’s license and clean driving record 
 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

● Oversee student crews in collaboration with Stage Management 

● Ensure safe working environment in the venue for the students 
 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

● Indoor environments, some with low light: workshop, control booth, stages, backstage areas, office spaces ● Seated and standing positions 
 

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, ETC: 

● Nights and weekends required 

● Must be able to lift 50 pounds 

● Must be comfortable with heights in excess of 24 feet 

● Must be able to work in tight, dark spaces
