The Department of Environmental Studies and Sciences (DESS) at The University of Winnipeg invites candidates to apply for a probationary appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. Salary levels will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, in accordance with The University of Winnipeg Faculty Association Collective Agreement. Subject to budgetary approval, the date of appointment is anticipated to be July 1, 2026.
The successful candidate will participate in the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research (C-FIR) at The University of Winnipeg which is dedicated to the development of interdisciplinary research, education, and training in the areas of forestry, forest ecosystems, forest values and the human uses of forests. They will teach primarily within the Forest Ecology and the Forest Policy and Management streams of DESS which are nationally accredited by the Canadian Institute of Forestry (CIF), the Canadian Environmental Accreditation Commission (CEAC), and the Environmental Careers Organization (ECO) Canada professional environmental practitioner certification initiative. The program prepares our graduates for employment in forestry, natural resources management, and allied fields working across Canada.
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in forestry, environmental science, environmental studies, or a closely related discipline, with relevant postdoctoral experience an asset. Candidates will have research expertise in forestry with a focus on one or more of the following areas: forest ecology, silviculture, GIS-based forest and habitat modelling, and forest disturbance dynamics impacted by climate change, wild fire, or forest pest management. Exceptional individuals with expertise in closely related fields of research may also be considered. This position will focus on research, teaching, and external engagement within the fields of forest ecology and forest management. We seek an outstanding colleague with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in research, and the ability to engage with industry, government, and community partners. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in the DESS. Courses could include forest ecology, silviculture, dendrochronology, forest fire and pest management, urban forestry, and other courses as assigned. They will also directly support the Masters in Environmental and Social Change (MESC) program through teaching as well as the recruitment and funding of graduate students. Capacity and enthusiasm for teaching field courses and land-based learning will be an asset. Candidates will pursue an independent, innovative, externally funded research program, and will meaningfully contribute to departmental and university service. Requirements also include a publication record and potential to attract competitively awarded research funding from a Canadian Tri-agency or similar national granting agencies.
