About This Opportunity 

The Principal, Internal Communications (ITS) is responsible for effectively developing, maintaining and coordinating the communication needs of the Information Technology Services Division (ITS).

The position will manage existing communication channels and platforms for the Division as well as advise on and assist in the development of a range of tools and strategies to deliver improved communications. The position will champion the cause of up-to-date communication medium, support staff across the organisation, instigate new initiatives and enhance the existing suite of communication options. The Principal, Internal Communications (ITS) will work closely with staff from the ITS Division and the Marketing and Communications Division.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Communications Framework and Strategy

  • Maintain a communications framework, guidance and templates for the ITS Division.

  • In collaboration with the Change Manager, develop and maintain an engagement plan for the ITS division and ensure appropriate and high-quality communication with stakeholders across the University, including through the development of reusable marketing and communications collateral.

  • Implement targeted communications strategies and initiatives that strengthen relationships and collaborations with stakeholders, students, staff and key audiences

  • Monitor and report on the impact and effectiveness of internal communication activities.

Communications Content

  • Identify, research, and write material for internal and external communication channels.

  • Draft messages and presentations relevant to internal ITS engagement on behalf of the Chief Information Officer and other senior staff members.

  • Provide advice on communications best practise and assist members of ITS to create clear, concise and engaging written communications materials.

  • Develop content, communications and marketing collateral for major initiatives, projects, announcements and events.

  • Maintain quality assurance standards and ensure all marketing and communication material and content developed within the ITS Division is accurate, effective, complies with UQ standards and brand policy, and has appropriate approvals prior to publication.

  • Ensure that communication content reflects and support ITS Cyber Security practices and guidelines.

Engagement Forums and Channels

  • Plan and manage forums and events to facilitate information sharing and leadership development across the IT function, including events focused on IT leaders and all IT staff events.

  • Develop and publish content for key IT news and knowledge sharing articles using a variety of digital channels.

  • Support the CIO in developing and maintaining a high-performance culture.

Web and Intranet Management

  • In collaboration with subject matter experts, develop content for ITS websites / pages and co-ordinate publication in accordance with University processes.

  • Ensure that the ITS websites / pages are operating effectively to meet the needs of stakeholders.

  • Liaise with the Marketing and Communication Division as the Digital Presence Coordinator for ITS to ensure that ITS’ digital presence aligns with UQ’s roadmaps, strategies and the One UQ vision.

  • Develop and maintain appropriate content management structures, practices and content guidelines for the IT Governance team intranet content across relevant systems including Confluence, Teams and SharePoint.

Other

  • Adopt and promote sound cyber security practices in compliance with UQ’s Cyber Security Policy and according to cyber security procedures and standards developed by the University or Division.

About You

The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal, verbal and written skills, including a demonstrated ability to write with clarity and precision. In addition, they will also have

Essential criteria:

  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, journalism or a related area and at least five years’ work experience OR an equivalent combination of experience and/or education/training.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of working in internal communication within a large, complex organising and producing a wide range of internal communication materials.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of communication channels and processes to advise on and implement best practice, with specific reference to digital communication channels.

  • Demonstrated experience of implementing communication processes and tools to plan and manage a wide range internal communication over the short and medium term.

  • High level of organisational skills including excellent time management, the ability to plan, prioritise, meet deadlines, multi-task and manage changing priorities of high volumes of work.

  • Ability to work with internal and external stakeholders to support the achievement of business objectives through communication activities.

Desirable criteria:

  • Knowledge of or experience in the Australian higher education sector is desirable, but not essential.

  • Knowledge of or experience in using publishing tools such as Adobe InDesign is desirable, but not essential.

  • Knowledge of or experience in using web content management tools such as Drupal is desirable, but not essential.

  • Knowledge of or experience in using collaboration tools such as Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Yammer, and Atlassian Confluence is desirable, but not essential.

What We Can Offer 

This is a full-time, continuing position at HEW level 7.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $90,538 – $98,719, plus super of up

to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $105,929 – $115,501 per annum.
