Job Description

The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) invites applications and nominations to fill the position for Principal Network Engineer. This is a renewable, full-time, non-tenured, administrative positions that will report to the Director of Infrastructure Services. The position will be located in Elko Nevada.

The NSHE is comprised of eight institutions: two universities, a state college, four community colleges, and a research institute. The public system of higher education in Nevada continues to experience rapid growth, with significant challenges and opportunities in serving over 100,000 students and 15,000 employees.

NSHE maintains a wide area network (NevadaNet) and multiple data centers along with a wide variety of systems and applications to provide services to its institutions. The Principal Network Engineer position is an integral part of the overall network services team. Under general supervision, incumbents perform a wide range of work at the highest level of complex and sophisticated economic and technical analysis, design, installation, testing, maintenance and troubleshooting connectivity hardware and software associated with the NSHE NevadaNet network, including routers, switches, fiber optic long haul transport and distribution equipment, firewalls, servers and other connectivity devices, racks, cabling, and power.  The incumbent also provides the highest-level data and video network engineering, operations, and security support services to NevadaNet constituents as required. Successful performance of the work requires a thorough knowledge of data and video communication network design and maintenance in a large-scale networking environment and must exercise sound judgment within established guidelines. The incumbent will also provide supervision and administrative oversight of a subordinate staff.

STARTING SALARY: Grade D (starting salary range approximately $110,000 – $120,000 and benefits package that includes health, dental, vision, life, and retirement.)

APPROXIMATE STARTING DATE:  January 1, 2023

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree is required; a degree in a technical discipline – Computer Science, Information Systems, Electrical or Communications/Network Engineering and/or an advanced degree is preferred. Additionally, a minimum of six years of direct work experience relating to data, video, or voice communications network design, equipment installation, operation, monitoring, troubleshooting, and problem resolution in a large corporation, university, or public utility environment is required. This position also requires excellent analytical skills, interpersonal, organizational and communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment.

Alternately, ten or more years, direct work experience relating to data, video, or voice communications systems/networks in a large corporation, university, public or private utility coupled with at least two years of formal education or training in a related field may be substituted for the Bachelor’s degree as qualifications for this position.

Travel statewide will also be required as necessary to gather information needed for technical analysis and/or preventive maintenance activities necessary to accomplish the desired objectives.  Travel both inside and outside the State of Nevada will also be required from time to time to attend training, or to represent SCS at conferences and administrative meetings.  Since a portion of this travel may be by motor vehicle, the incumbent will be required to have a valid Nevada driver’s license.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:  Successful candidates must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities.  Applicants should address following items in their letter of application when applying for this position.

  • Extensive experience in IP wide area data network design, equipment installation, operation, troubleshooting/problem resolution, testing, monitoring and maintenance

  • Extensive experience in the implementation and management of moderately complex LANs and WANs using IP routing protocols such as BGP and OSPF

  • Extensive experience in the deployment and management of network security technologies such as access lists, firewalls, and DDoS detection

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team environment

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully manage, coordinate, deploy and maintain highly complex technical networking projects and systems

  • Extensive experience in creating and maintaining project-related documentation, network diagrams, testing plans, and deployment plans.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, creativity, verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and the demonstrated ability to be a productive team member.

  • Researching and providing in-depth analysis related to new technologies, tools, and methodologies

  • Microsoft (Visio, Word, Excel)

  • Network bandwidth capacity/availability planning and reporting

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The duties of this position will include, but not be limited to, the following areas of responsibility within Network Services:

  • Designs, procures, installs, configures, tests, and performs diagnostic and preventive maintenance activities in support of NSHE wide area and data center network operations

  • Collaborates with network end users for the purpose of assessing and implementing ongoing customer network requirements

  • Monitors NSHE video/voice/data performance to ensure overall network quality, availability, and security

  • Technical support for NSHE statewide network services such as Internet1 and Internet2 connectivity, videoconferencing and other NevadaNet services. 

  • Supervision of subordinate staff

  • Network equipment inventory and maintenance contract administration

  • Documents network topology, asset inventories, customer and vendor service agreements other administrative, technical, or historical documentation requirements

Limited travel with overnight stays is required in support of activities related to either position.
