Job Title: Practicum Instructor (I/S), EDBE 8D01

The Faculty of Education is deeply committed to both the process and goal of social justice, including critical inquiry, inclusive practices, and equitable participation. Overview: The two instructors co-teaching EDBE 8D01 will professionally bring to life the content and knowledge by implementing curriculum and teaching approaches that engage students in conversations on educational inclusion and equity and pedagogy. Practicum Instructors (PI) are expected to be aware of a variety of critical practices relevant to their field/subject area that can support all students, attend to our unconscious biases, and encourage inclusivity. In addition, PIs will exemplify competencies relevant to specific methods and foundations courses being taught while modeling the Standards of Practice and Ethical Standards of the Ontario College of Teachers. As this is a co-instructional position, the PIs will also possess strong collaborative skills. The Practicum Instructor I/S position is held jointly with the position of Practicum Advisor I/S (EDBE 8P70).

Duties:

  • Act as a co-instructor and be responsible for the successful delivery of all aspects of this course;
  • As per standing instructor positions at Brock, instructors are responsible for student contact time and non-contact time. Contact time includes all classes as scheduled, observation days, internship days, and practice teaching evaluations. The non-classroom work may include preparation of lecture material, student consultation, marking or grading, holding office hours, and other course administration as may be required such as attending required meetings (e.g., beginning of program and sessional instructor meetings);
  • Visit and liaise with associate teachers, and principals during structured experience days and internship;
  • Advise, mentor and provide feedback to teacher candidates during internships with reference to the Program Handbook;
  • Work collegially and collaborate/instruct with other Practicum Instructors;
  • Work collegially and collaboratively with other team instructors including attending team meetings and debriefings;
  • Participate, as warranted, in the Department’s referral procedures as outlined in the Program Handbook;
  • Plan structured experience days (Wednesdays) and microteaching with year 1 teacher candidates;
  • Collaborate with Placement Officer in arranging for/setting up internship/placements;
  • Coach and mentor teacher candidates and work with associate teachers;
  • Evaluate teacher candidates at various school sites during the internship;
  • Use of a provided Brock email address for all Brock-related communications;
  • Complete the mandatory Brock instructor’s online tutorial prior to first class (about 1 hour).

Qualifications

  • Normally a minimum of 5 years teaching experience;
  • A Master’s degree or other recognized specialization in the field such as a 3-level specialization;
  • Demonstrated leadership in curriculum and/or education;
  • Demonstrates currency in educational theory and pedagogy;
  • Knowledge about social justice and equity through an anti-racist lens;
  • Preference may be given to applicants with experience with teacher candidates or other adult learners;
  • Competency in using technology for course management purposes; or
  • A combination of education and experience matching and/or exceeding the above
  • Must hold an active membership in the Ontario College of Teachers, a Valid Driver’s License, and pass a police vulnerable sector check (PVSC).
