Job Title: Practicum Advisor EDBE 8P70 (IS) Year 1 

Overview: The Practicum Advisor (PA) position is largely focused on connecting the learning in EDBE 8D01, the foundational courses associated with year 1, to the field of practice by supporting the development of teacher candidates as culturally responsive and competent practitioners. Practicum Advisors (PA) will implement curriculum and teaching approaches that engage students in conversations on educational inclusion and equity and pedagogy. PAs are expected to be aware of a variety of critical practices relevant to their field/subject area that can support all students, attend to unconscious biases (both self and teacher candidate), and encourage inclusivity. The Practicum Advisor I/S position is held jointly with the position of Practicum Instructor I/S, EDBE 8D01. 

Duties:  

  • Become familiar with Brock University policies and adhere to them.
  • Complete required Brock instructor’s online tutorial prior to first class.
  • Use a provided Brock email address for all Brock-related communications with teacher candidates and program personnel;
  • Collaborate and co-plan with co-instructor.
  • Effectively deliver all aspects of the course.
  • Manage instructional contact time and non-contact time. Contact time includes all classes as scheduled. The non-contact time includes preparation of lecture materials, managing the learning management system(s), student consultation, marking or grading, holding office hours, and other course administration as may be required such as attending required meetings.
  • Adapt instructional and assessment strategies to accommodate diverse learning needs.
  • Advise, mentor, and provide feedback to teacher candidates in relation to course concepts/content and Professional Standards of Practice and Ethical Standards of the OCT;
  • Work collegially and collaboratively with other team instructors, course team lead(s) including attending team meetings and debriefings.
  • Collaborate with Placement Office in arranging for/setting up placements;
  • Advise, coach, mentor, and provide feedback to teacher candidates in Block 1 Practicum (EDBE 8P70) with reference to the Teacher Education Program Handbook.
  • Work with associate teachers and respond to associate teacher’s correspondence in a timely manner.
  • Visit and liaise with associate teachers and principals when needed.
  • Respond to associate teacher’s correspondence in a timely manner.
  • Participate, as warranted, in the Department’s referral procedures as outlined in the Teacher Education Program Handbook.
  • Evaluate teacher candidates during the practicum.
  • To submit final grades by deadlines.
  • Travel to schools may be a requirement of this position.

Qualifications:  

  • Normally, a minimum of 5 years teaching experience;
  • Normally, a master’s degree or other recognized specialization in the field such as a 3-level specialization;
  • Must hold an active membership in the Ontario College of Teachers and be in good standing at the time of appointment;
  • Must hold a valid Driver’s License and pass a police vulnerable sector check (PVSC).
  • Demonstrated leadership in curriculum and/or education;
  • Exhibits contemporary knowledge of educational theory and pedagogy including assessment;
  • Knowledge about social justice and equity through anti-racist and anti-oppressive lenses;
  • Experience facilitating challenging conversations and difficult topics with adult learners.
  • Preference may be given to applicants with experience with teacher candidates or other adult learners;
  • Competency in using educational technology and platforms for content creation, course management and delivery;
  • Experience with blended modes of course delivery; or
  • A combination of education and experience matching and/or exceeding the above
  • All Practicum Advisors must be available for the entire teaching block duration*
