The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 520 employees and a revenue 2022 of 518 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

The Division of Clinical Geriatric, with over 100 employed and affiliated researchers are located both in Neo, Campus Flemingsberg and in the Q-building in Solna. We conduct research focusing on cognitive impairment, dementia, and other aging related disorders, and education, among other medical graduates. Our research is multi-faceted and is in close collaboration with leading institutions and clinics worldwide. The research is clinically oriented with an emphasis on diagnosis, prevention and treatment. The division has a close cooperation with the Medical Unit Aging within Theme Inflammation and Aging at Karolinska University Hospital.

The applicant will work within the Nordic Brain Network (NBN), which is part of the division of Clinical Geriatrics, Center for Alzheimer Research, NVS. The largest part of this multidisciplinary research team is located at KI (Q-building in Solna), but team members are also present at the Karolinska University Hospital, in Finland and the UK. Broadly, the NBN carries out research focusing on prevention, diagnosis and treatment of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The research team has carried out prevention trials (RCT) and is involved in several international collaborations and networks ( network).

Within this network, the team will start a new project entitled ‘FINGER-Pro: Evidence-based health promotion interventions for healthy aging: adapting and implementing the FINGER multidomain model across different settings and sociocultural contexts’, where the main goal is to conduct various studies and initiatives to adapt and implement the multidomain lifestyle FINGER intervention in various contexts, while also examining new risk and protective factors and risk prediction tools.

Your mission

You will be part of the NBN team and will conduct research according to the project goals described above.

You will be responsible for:

  • Conducting literature reviews
  • Data processing
  • Statistical analyses
  • Interpretation of the results
  • Preparing and submitting manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals
  • Presenting the results in relevant seminars and conferences
  • Project coordination
  • Maintain regular communication between different collaborating centres to share recent results and updates
  • Integrate the expertise from different group members

To conduct the research, you will work with several research studies, which will be selected based on the specific research questions. These include population-based cohort studies, clinic-based cohorts studies and randomized controlled trials. You will also support students in the team, contribute to various collaborative projects and attend virtual meeting to collaborate with team members located in different sites in Sweden, Finland and in the UK.

This is a full-time (100%) temporary position for 2 years, with possibility of extension.

Your profile

Qualified to be employed as a Postdoctoral Fellow is one who has obtained a doctorate degree. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant’s main supervisor, director or equivalent.

We are seeking a researcher with a PhD in Epidemiology or related field (e.g. Neuroscience, Psychology) with solid statistical knowledge, and capacities to independently perform statistical analyses. Priority will be given to candidates with experiences working with older populations, cognitive impairment and dementia, as well as data on biomarkers including neuroimaging, fluid biomarkers, among others.

Being fluent in spoken and written English is required. The successful candidate should show a high level of responsibility, independence and problem-solving skills, and be an active team player in our large and dynamic multidisciplinary group. Great importance is attributed to collaboration abilities and communications skills, as a substantial part of the work involves collaboration with others. The workload may be variable and will require flexibility of working hours to meet deadlines. The candidate should also have good project management skills to structure the work according to planned timelines.
