The University’s faculties and interdisciplinary centres focus on research in the areas of Computer Science and ICT Security, Materials Science, European and International Law, Finance and Financial Innovation, Education, Contemporary and Digital History. In addition, the University focuses on cross-disciplinary research in the areas of Data Modelling and Simulation as well as Health and System Biomedicine. Times Higher Education ranks the University of Luxembourg #3 worldwide for its “international outlook,” #20 in the Young University Ranking 2021 and among the top 250 universities worldwide.

The Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine (FSTM) contributes multidisciplinary expertise in the fields of MathematicsPhysicsEngineeringComputer ScienceLife Sciences and Medicine. Through its dual mission of teaching and research, the FSTM seeks to generate and disseminate knowledge and train new generations of responsible citizens, in order to better understand, explain and advance society and environment we live in.

The Department of Engineering (DoE) embedded in the Faculty of Sciences, Technology and Medicine (FSTM) is an interdisciplinary group conducting research in the classical domains of civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering and is the centre of technological expertise for companies in Luxembourg. At DoE, special emphasis is given to numerical simulation techniques reducing required experimental effort. However, validation of the models and experimental work remains an essential practice. Both applied and fundamental research projects in engineering research are integrated into a network of national, regional, and international public and industrial research institutions.

In a cooperative Project with BorgWarner Luxembourg the University is executing a research project devoted to the modelling of Gasoline Direct Injection engine system. The main part of the project will deal with the analysis of the complex multiphase flow phenomenon in a high-pressure GDi fuel pump in a full cycle operation.
