Offer Description

Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences create a unique environment for multidisciplinary, inspirational, and high-impact research and education. Our universities community has its competitive edges in technology, health and society. www.tuni.fi/en

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher on the R&D-project on control of light-weight flexible link robots funded by Research Council of Finland.

The research group on autonomous mobile manipulators at Tampere University, Finland, currently has nearly 20 researchers and is led by Prof. Mattila. In the group, we are doing multidisciplinary Field Robotics research by bridging theory and practice and closely cooperating with the industry.

Job Description

Our group is seeking for a Postdoctoral Researcher with a strong background and interest in dynamics and control of single-body and multi-body flexible systems (including nonlinear adaptive model-based control, subsystem-based control, and other applicable schemes).

It is foreseen that future high-strength fossil-free steels will pave the road toward lightweight machine structures with zero carbon footprint and lower energy consumption. However, the bottleneck hindering the adoption of considerably lighter structures is the unavailability of real-world control theory for multi-link flexible robot structures.  Our ambitious target is to develop real-world control theory for flexible multi-link robot structures that allows the widespread adoption of considerably lighter robotic structures with lower environmental impact.

The main task of the Postdoctoral Researcher will be to work on development of IMU-based end-point position sensing, state estimation/observation and feedback control methods for lightweight flexible multi-link structures. The work is mainly composed of development activities, including algorithm and software development, setting of experimental systems, collecting data and performing experiments related to currently running research projects such as FUTURA , FEMMA and TITAN .

We perform our research on full-scale experimental field robotics systems at our outdoor lab and using the research infrastructure we share with our OEM industrial collaborators.

The exact direction of the research is determined by the project tasks, but responsibilities and research topic can be tailored to the candidate’s skillset, experience and interests. Participation in the project also offers international cooperation possibilities and scholar visits abroad.

Requirements

  • PhD degree in relevant field (e.g., control engineering, automation, robotics, mechanical engineering, mechatronics )
  • Strong background in control and estimation theory and in robotics.
  • Good skills in experimental implementation of control systems and hardware interfaces.
  • Programming experience in at least one of the following languages and environments: Matlab/Simulink, C, C++, Python.
  • Good track records of scientific contributions through publications

The candidate is expected to conduct independent research and, at the same time, contribute to the topics listed above. Successful candidates will be furthermore given the opportunity to work with M.Sc. students.

Tampere University is a unique, multidisciplinary, forward-thinking, and evolving community. Our values are openness, critical thinking, diversity, learner-centredness, courage, erudition, and responsibility. We hope you can embrace these values and promote them in your role.

We offer

The position will be for a period of 2 years. There might a possibility of one year extension. The starting date is preferably 1.1.2024 or as mutually agreed upon by both parties. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. The position of a Postdoctoral Researcher is placed on the job demands levels 5-6 (teaching and research staff). A typical salary of Postdoctoral Researcher in this demand level is around 3500-4000 EUR/month.
