Postdoctoral Researcher (f/m/d) | Algal development and evolution

Max Planck Institute for Biology Tübingen, Tübingen

Job Offer from October 12, 2022

The Max Planck Institute for Biology Tübingen , Department of Algal Development and Evolution seeks a Postdoctoral Researcher (f/m/d).

Job description

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to lead the development and application of single-cell methodologies to the brown algae. Brown algae ‘invented’ multicellularity independently of plants and animals and the molecular basis of their developmental patterns remains largely unknown. Our goal is to understand the origin and evolution of cell types in this group of complex multicellular eukaryotes. Specifically, the postdoc will apply scRNAseq to a range of brown algal species representative of the levels of multicellular complexity across the group, characterize cell populations across tissues, reconstruct the ancestry of cells and infer the cell type that constituted the ancestor of the brown algae. The project is funded by the Moore Foundation and brings together experimental and theoretical groups in Germany and France with complementary expertise in algal genetics and cellular phenotyping, single-cell genomics, computational biology and theoretical modeling.

Requirements

We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher, with a strong background in single-cell technologies and computational biology. Knowledge and experience in single-cell RNA-seq and data analysis is necessary. Experience in CRISPR/Cas and molecular biology is a plus. Candidates should have an advanced academic degree (Ph.D.) in biology, genomics, biochemistry, biotechnology or a related field and have published previously in peer-reviewed journals. The candidate should be able to work independently and also have excellent team working skills. The position further requires organizational qualifications and the ability to communicate effectively with internal and external collaborators. An excellent written and oral command of English is essential.

Your application

The position is available from January 2023. Candidates will be offered a 1 -year contract to start (with possibility of extensions) with a salary bed on German TVöD guidelines according to previous experience and qualifications.

Applications should be written in English. The application shall include a CV, a letter of motivation, degree certificates, and names and contact information of at least two references. Please send in a single PDF document to [email protected] by 1st December 2022.
