Position Summary:
The team will initiate the partnership network and design process required to establish a Canada wide biodiversity observation network (CAN BON). Core elements of this work will include: 1) Establish a broad partnership network and conduct resource availability and needs assessment, 2) design a biodiversity data strategy linking multiple sources of ecological, social, and economic information to support regular assessments of biodiversity status and trends; 3) deploy statistical and geospatial analysis tools to produce an integrated monitoring network design and sampling strategy to complement existing monitoring efforts; and 4) design and pilot, a nationwide biodiversity model and prediction service. This work will be guided by an expert advisory group and done in broad collaboration with project partners at ECCC and GEO BON and other organizations and researchers across Canada.
Qualifications:
• Experience with large project design and partnership building, especially within the broad biodiversity and conservation community.
• Expertise with data and knowledge management systems, including braiding diverse approaches to biodiversity knowledge including indigenous (e.g. two-eyed seeing) and western science.
• Advanced skills in statistical programming and modeling.
• Advanced skills in geospatial data analysis.
• Familiarity with state-of-the-art biodiversity and ecosystem models.
• Knowledge of integrated monitoring design theory and tools (Python, Julia and/or R).
Education/Experience:
PhD in related field obtained in the last 5years (2020 or later) – Strong computational and ecosystem modelling background.
